identical vs. fraternal weights

I've kind of assumed that I'm having fraternal twins since I found out there are two.  However, the last two growth scans the babies were exactly the same weight which makes me wonder.  As of yesterday, my girls are both 1lb 7oz.  I know they can be inaccurate, but how did your twins weights match up and are they identical or fraternal?

Re: identical vs. fraternal weights

  • Weights of the babies aren't an indicator of identical vs. fraternal.  Mine are fraternal and their weights were pretty similar throughout my pregnancy although Baby A ended up being alot bigger at birth.

  • mine are all identical, and two weighed the same at birth (only a couple of grams difference) and the other was 7 oz less. so that right there should show you that it doesn't matter. :)

  • Why assume they're fraternal?

  • Mine were born .5lb apart and they are di/di identical.

  • My girls are identical and at birth weighed almost a lb apart.  Ava was 5 lbs 2 oz and Grace was 4 lbs 3 oz.  They shared a placenta and were in the same gestational sac but each had their own amniotic sac, so they were mono/di.  Weight will not be an indicator of this.
  • Mine are fraternal and they have been measuring either exactly the same or only 1 oz apart at my growth scans.  I don't think size is in any way an indicator of indential v. fraternal.  Much depends on their placentas, as well as the genes.

I just have to tell you that I love your picture!  I am having identical mono/di girls too, and your picture gives me so much to look forward to!

  • Mine are boy/girl so definitely fraternal and their weights and measurements are almost identical. Weights can't indicate fraternal vs. identical.  Since they are the same sex you will have to get a blood test to determine for sure.

  • Thanks, I think I got this idea in my head from the identical twins on the biggest loser.

  • That's not really an indication, but my babies always measured the exact same during the scans and then at birth one was 4lb 12 oz and the other one 5lb 5oz!

  • my boys measured the same often on my scans - and at birth were 2lbs apart (and are now 5lbs apart).... means nothing... as others said - both ID and fraternal can be totally different for various reasons- some of them not so good - so be glad yours are similar weights! that = less risk.
  • Yeah, I wouldn't assume anything based on their weights. My boys are frats and they measured the same earlier on in pregnancy (until the third tri or so) and were just 3 oz apart at birth. If they are di-di and same sex, there's about a 1 in 9 chance that they are identical.
