39 weeks pregnant and only a fingertip dilated?

I am mostly a lurker but I am a little confused and disappointed. So I had my First internal today which by the way was not that bad. My question is does one fingertip mean one centimeter dilated? he also said my cervix was soft but baby head is still high. I have just been feeling a lot of pressure in my pelvic and rectum that i thought i had more progress.  Also  is it normal to have cramping after an internal exam? I was so disappointed by the news that my head went blank and i forgot to ask my OB.

Fingertip isn't quite one centimeter. I was "fingertip" at 37 weeks and 1 cm at 38 weeks. I had crazy cramps all day yesterday after my internal and I have heard that is pretty normal. Don't worry about how dilated you are...that doesnt mean much and can change in an instant!

Thank you for the feedback is just that with my due date around the corner i am getting so anxious and i would rather progress on my own instead of being induced!

w/ my first I was 4 days late and only a finger tip dilated... this time I've been walking around for a couple weeks at 3 cms- it can all change really quickly so try not to worry about that.

I know how frustrating this is!! I too am just a finger tip as of Tuesday, 80% effaced and +1 station...so here's hoping we get more progress soon!

at my first internal 36w 6d I was same as you a fingertip... this past thursday 37w 6d my doc said no progress... it will likely be a couple more weeks... and no less than 24 hours later my water broke and I was off to L&D.... my doc was in disbelief.... so it can really happen at any time... GL
