Why do baby mattress freak me out so badly? I mean why do they all seem to have plastic or vinyal covers? I can put a mattress cover on it real easy, why do they need to make the whole thing like that? Boo on the fact I am allergic to wool.
I am guessing the plastic and vinyl covers are to protect the mattress from stains/smells... They aren't as cozy as people mattresses, that's for sure.
I know babies are supposed to sleep on thier backs, but they reach a stage where heck they can roll over and put thier face into the mattress even while asleep. Thats what freaks me, is the idea of my baby rolling over in his/her sleep and being face down in plastic.
Lady-do the organic cotton mattresses have the vinyl covering too? I would suggest a foam mattress (like futons) but I don't think they'd give baby enough support, probably being worse than the plastic or vinyl...
oh dear! Now how un-ecofriendly/un-organic is this??? VINYL covering...same thing as PVC, the highest ranked carcinogen of all the plastics?? WOW! I majorly see your dilemma! What about a regular mattress, with an organic mattress pad? Or do all baby/toddler bed mattresses have that covering? I don't remember our toddler bed having a plastic covering, in fact, I know it didn't, because I had to buy a waterproof mattress pad for it, so he wouldn't pee through at night.

Hmmm....
The organic cotton one at bru seems to be covered in some sort of plastic. I have read that the foam ones are ok as long as firm enough.
Maybe I should order the one from costco, at least if it ends up being plastic I can return it to the store I think.
