I bought a 1-year old the Fisher Price Ride on Zebra at her party and it was the hit of the whole event.  It is still one of her favorite toys.

I usually give an outfit and a learning toy.  The Laugh and Learn puppy is a great gift, Target sells it for like $20.  The AlphaBug by LeapFrog is another good one, I think that's $15.

I second the books.  But look for board books - one year olds are still to young and will rip the pages of real books.

I bought my niece everything under the sun. She has tons of leap pad toys, the learning puppy, just everything.

She mostly loves anything that plays music and she really LOVES the walk 'n ride I got her. She drives my brother crazy with wanting to ride around all the time. She's had it 8 months and it's still her favorite toy.
