Trying to Get Pregnant

How long have YOU been trying?

Hi! I'm new here.I wanted to talk to some people who are in my boat.

Back at the end of November I was late. I continued to be late through the beginning of December. I took two pregnancy tests and both came back negative. I run like clock work. By Day 9, I called my doctor and we decided I should take a blood test. Later that same afternoon I started spotting then bleeding like a normal flow, but maybe a little heavier. (sorry TMI)

I went to my ob/gyn the next day, which happened to be my 27th birthday, and we discussed what she thought was going on. She thought that either I just had an abnormal cycle or it was a chemical pregnancy. My husband and I weren't even trying. In fact, the opposite. I took a blood test just for my own knowledge. It came back negative, but my ob/gyn said that can happen since I had already started bleeding. 28 days later, I started my period again, like clockwork. At this point I'm pretty sure it was a chemical pregnancy. That thought still hasn't quite hit me yet.

After that, my DH and I talked it over and decided to start trying this month, January. We timed my cycle and we DBD a few days to ovulation. Due to DH's schedule, we weren't able to DBD the day before or the day of. Then we waited a very anxious 10 days.

I took a test and it came back negative. I was very disappointed but DH took it in stride. Now, my period was due yesterday and as of this morning I still don't have it, but I feel cramps. I'm afraid to test again. My DH has a boy's weekend trip planned. He wants me to wait until he gets home on Sunday.

My ob/gyn isn't worried about me being able to conceive. However, I am. My mom had 4 miscarriages between me and my brother. While she was older and had some physical issues, it still worries me that part of her problems might have been biological. She had just begun testing when she got pregnant with my brother and carried him full term. The testing was never finished.

If I'm not pregnant this month, we're holding off on trying again until May. This is because of timing issues.

I was just curious how long some people have been trying. What were some things you tried while TTC? Any advice?

Thanks!

  • That was far far too long but I read it. Few things.

    1. You need to educate yourself about ttc. Read TCOYF and learn to chart your cycles at www.fertilityfriend.com

    2. Your mother's fertility has zero to do with yours. Every single person is different.

    3. People here have been trying for 3 seconds to 3 years +.

    4. Read the FAQ.

    5. Lurk.

    GL to you.

  • You can't have a "Chemical Pregnancy" without a positive pregnancy test.

you didn't positive tests (both pee sticks and blood), therefore you didn't have a chemical pregnancy

very rarely will your family's history of fertility pass along to you.

oh, and to answer your question:   I tried for 20 months.  (my mom got pregnant first try both times she tried).

  • Much much longer than you like over 2 years with about 5 losses and 4 CP's. GL

  • We tried for more than three years. I would recommend reading TCOYF (see abbreviations at the lower left-hand corner of the page). I wouldn't wish chemical pregnancies or trouble TTC on yourself so early in the process. There are perfectly normal reasons why your cycle could have been off a little bit last month.

Lurk, read, learn about your body and I wish you the best of luck.

It took me 14 months of being off the pill, and one m/c to get pg with DD.  Still trying to have a healthy pregnancy for #2 (started trying in May)

  • wow, that was long.  First off, you don't know that you had a CP, it was probably just a longer cycle.  Secondly, you just started TTC, don't assume you'll have problems just because your mother had 4 miscarriages.

I've been trying since Oct 07.

    Hey sulfa!!!

  • "Like clockwork " is a term we all kind of chuckle at around here just so you know.  It's totally normal to have cycles that are a little wonky from time to time.

I don't even know what DBD stands for.   Is it sex?  If so, sex is the same # of letters - be a big girl and just type that.     So, did your calendar on the wall tell you the day you'd be ovulating?   Day 14?    You know with a 28 day "Clockwork" (shudders) cycle - you could O any day between day 10 and day 20.

  • Me and DH have been trying for 5 cycles now. Only time will tell about your fertility. It can also take a very healthy couple up to a year to get pregnant. Remeber you only have a 20% chance of that egg being fertilized even if you time sex right.

The newbie repost is needed here. Who has it?

I see someone beat me to it. It takes me too long to reply when I'm at work.

I agree with gym, your clock must be broken. And you did not have a chemical pregnancy, you had an off cycle (normal). If it was a chemical pg you would have gotten a + HPT. And PLEASE LURK, LURK, LURK!

  • Oh, and I don't even want to know how you pinpointed your O this cycle, but regardless, 10dpo is very early to test. You have a 35% chance of the test being accurate at that point if you are pregnant.

  • We are in our 10th month of TTC.  It is highly unlikely that you had a chemical pregnancy without a positive pregnancy test.  It is more than likely that you ovulated later than normal and therefore, got your period later than normal.

  • There is no such thing as clockwork cycles. Seriously, get a copy of TCOYF and learn how your body works. Second, without a positive HPT, you can't just assume you had a chemical pregnancy. Most likely with both the negative HPT and negative blood test, you had a longer cycle.

We were TTC for 4 cycles when we got our BFP, miscarried at 8 weeks and now we're waiting for AF to arrive so that we can jump back on the TTC wagon.

  • We've been TTC for 16 cycles, just started #17.

We've tried pre-seed, pineapple core, sex every day, sex every other day, opk's.

We are going to have our first IUI this cycle!

  • We've been TTC for 5 months.

  • That was one giant running thought there..to answer the question in your post - we're on cycle 14.  Nothing wrong with either of us, tests have been done, charts have been completed, research has been done.  For some women, they blink and get pregnant, for others it's a bit more complex.  Just because you're not pregnant after two cycles of tasking tests doesn't mean something is wrong with you.  If you do this to yourself every cycle, you're going to bring uneeded stress and anxiety to the process.

Relax. Start charting to learn about your cycles.  Lurk here, you'll learn a lot.  And enjoy the process for awhile...post this novel again in a year if you're still not pregnant.

    Good luck
