High-Risk Pregnancy

Rotated Spine

Hi ladies!  I'm already a frequent poster here for my GD, but I have another concern to worry about now.  Throughout my pregnancy, I have had a growing lower back pain which I chalked up to sciatica.  It is so bad that I sometimes wake up like 8 times a night in such bad pain.  At my last OB appointment I metioned the pain, and my doctor set me up with a physical therapy appointment.

Well, at my first consultation the therapist found that my sacrum was rotated to the right, likely due to some over-stretching I might have done early in pregnancy (like reaching for something high up, etc.).  And since my ligaments and everything in me were getting tighter from the lessened room caused by LO, it didn't rotate back into place.  Instead, my spine started to slowly follow the rotation of my sacrum, and now the rotation is almost as high as my rear ribs.  The therapist says that they can discover this rotation by feeling the spine (which she did with me) but that she could actually SEE the twist!  Ouch!  And I still have sciatica, because the rotated spine twists and pinches my sciatic nerve.

So now I am doing some stretches that they taught me, and have a couple more weeks of therapy appointments, which can be painful and difficult being almost 8 months pregnant.  But now that I'm as far long as I am, I am beginning to worry about labor and delivery.  Since I have GD I can't be certain that I will get to deliver vaginally, but if I get to, I'm worried that this rotated sacrum might cause issues, because if I remember, it's a part of the pelvis, right?  And if my pelvis is compromised, will it affect delivery?

Thanx!

Re: Rotated Spine

  • That sounds so painful!  The sacrum is almost like a plate in the back of your pelvis.

If you're comfortable with it, I might try going to a chiropractor as well, I'd call ahead and make sure they have plenty of experience with pregnant women.  DH has made his back start curving and it's almost healed after a few visits, he also has been given specific exercises, but I know I couldn't do most of them while pregnant.   I bet by combining the chiro and PT that you could get more comfortable.  I would think the sacrum being messed up could affect delivery, your OB could probably tell you for sure though.

  • Is your PT doing any joint/spinal manipulation? I have a similar problem and mine is doing this as well as having me do excercizes and it is really helping.

I would also ask your PT more about the childbirth experience with this particular issue. Mine has discussed it with me as well.
