Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Can babies have bread?

Maybe stupid question but can babies eat little bits of broken up bread to feed to themselves?  Is it an allergy risk? Or a choking hazard?

Re: Can babies have bread?

  • My Baby-Led Weaning book says bread is just fine, though not to exceed 2 slices per day. They recommend cutting it into little "fingers" or toasting it so it's easier for baby to grab and gnaw on.

  • I think we started toast around 7 months with #1... there are teething biscuits... I think wheat is the allergy risk, but I don't recall why toast not bread...

  • When we have baguette or out to a restaurant with thick pieces of bread - we give a slice to Grant. I don't cut it up into pieces, he holds it and bites off small bites to eat on his own. I think more ends up on the high chair and floor though lol
  • DS loves his bread.  Toasted, fresh, grilled (grilled cheese sandwich).

  • I avoid bread that has honey in it. You will be amazed at how hard it is to find bread w/out it in it.
  • Honestly, we try everything under the sun (except nuts).  Just stay nearby.  She didn't like bread, but, then, she doesn't like much.  Try spreading apple sauce on tiny pieces on toasted bagel.  She kind of liked that.  For a minute.
  • Yes to all breads!  She loves it.

  • Perfect! I have only been giving veggies and fruit but tonight I decided to rip up bread and give it to her and then thought twice about it... I want her to start using her hands to feed herself now.
