3 week appt. stats & a BFing question

Had an appt. today at the pedi. Twins will be 3 weeks old tomorrow. Both have gained just about a pound from birth weight. Wahoo. Isaac is now 7 lbs. Emily is now 6 lbs. 8 oz. (he was 6 at birth she was 5 lbs. 9 oz.). Both look great! Yay for healthy babies and good gainers!

I've been BFing the babies so far and pedi was pretty impressed with that. And I'm glad it's working out so well for us (not that I wouldn't use formula, I'm just glad to not have to pay for it at this point, LOL!).

Pedi told me though that I should be taking 2 Viactiv calcium supplements a day, my prenatal AND probably another multi-vitamin, just to make sure I'm not depriving myself of these nutrients, since the babies will get it no matter what and my body will take from me what I'm not eating if need be. I was still taking my prenatal but not the others yet.

So--BFers. Do you take that many supplements each day? Seems like a lot to me, but it does make sense. It's two babies now, not just one. I will say I've been craving cereal and milk again, so maybe that's my bodies way of saying, "Hey...up the calcium lady!!"

  • I was only advised to take prenatal vitamins- glad BF is working out great for you! :)  I'm very happy it has worked out for me as well, the cost of formula is HIGH, but now that both twins have two teeth each at the bottom I'm not sure how long I'll be able to keep on EBF since I already got bit a few times...ouch! ha-ha

  • Congrats on healthy babies!!  I'm so glad to hear they are doing well!!  And yay for you with the BFing!  I'm trying too, and it is not an easy task!  You are a rock star!

My LC just told me to keep taking my pre-natals, and has not mentioned additional supplements.  Sorry, thats no help lol

And how are your babies 3 weeks already??  Wow, where does the time go?

  • I never did other than a regular multi vitamin. I do eat a balanced diet,  and of course women do need a lot of calcium in general so a calcium supplement is probably a good idea.

Congratulations on BFing your twins, that's great!

  • i eat 2 chocolate calcium chews a day but only because they taste good...hehe.

  • Congrats on the great weights!

I am not taking any additional calcium, just my PNV.  I do try to drink an extra glass or two of milk each day and I am starving all the time so I try to eat alot of fruits and veggies.

  • I only take my prental and I take a DHA supplement.  I can say for probably the first 5 months of breastfeeding I was STARVING all the time.  I ate a LOT, so I am thinking I got what I needed from that.  So just eat and drink what your body craves, just be sure to drink lots of water and stay hydrated!

I've been breastfeeding since birth and we have been supplementing 1 formula bottle now during the day when I'm at work.  I don't pump enough to make 2 full feedings for each of them.  But it is working fine.  I agree BF is saving us SO much money!
