Post partum Pre-E ladies??? Need your advice!

Hi Ladies,

So I have been dealing with PP HBP for 4 months. I am on Labetalol. Did any of you pre-e ladies have minor spikes throughout your experience. It seems like my body is so sensitive and at times will have little spikes. Of course I now know what it feels like because my vision gets a little funny and I just feel off. I am feel a bit alone in this and was wondering if any of you out there experienced anything similar. My cardiologist is going to switch my meds just because he says that the side effects of labetalol are hard to deal with especially with a new baby. Looking for some support from any of you out there. Having a rough couple of days with this.

  • My hbp never went away - and it is higher at some times than at others.  I take procardia XL, which is a longer acting med than labetalol, and I think that helps keep mine regulated to be honest.

  • I take 400 mg of Labetalol and 30mg of Procardia XL. My BP runs about 116/68. I do have some higher spikes, but nothing that causes symptoms... usually somehere around 127/77.  I feel like Labetalol is a weak med. When I was first diagnosed with PP Pre-E, I was on 1200 mg!!! That put me in a fog. My doctors want me to stay on a pregnancy safe med (which Labetalol is) so I will be safe (and the baby) the next time around.

Do you still take your BP often? I take mine a few days a week, just to keep an eye on it.

I don't know about you, but I am sick and tired of this BP crap. It seems like it's always up in the air and NEVER going to be 100% controlled. I'm having an especially difficult time with it because before pregnancy I had really low BP. Oh well... Sorry for that little rant.

Good luck with everything and keep me posted!

  • I am sick and tired of it too, for the same reasons.
  • I had HBP before I had DS and then post partum Pre-e.  But before that my BP had already sky rocketed.  Since that time (almost four years ago) I've had to be on two BP meds.  I was taking Norvasc and Avalide (with a diuretic).  We just switched to Procardia and Labelatolol this week.  So no feedback on that.  I understand your frustration.  It seems like I'm constantly having spikes no matter what I do or how compliant I am with the medications.  I can  always tell because I get a headache.  But I'm also in a very high stress job so I'm sure that has a lot to do with my spikes.  Good luck.
  • Hi Ladies,

Thanks for all your support and replies!! I too am frustrated. All of this started PP and I just feel my body is just not balanced. I, like all of you, are compliant with meds and have been following a low sodium diet as well and I just get frustrated because at times I feel like I am holding back and  feeling that this is not going to go away. I hear some people complain about how they hated to be pregnant and did everything not by the book and everything was fine after they delivered. And here is me, who did everything I was supposed to and this happened. I was very fit with no BP problems pre-pregnancy and postpartum everything just went crazy. I too think Labetalol can be a weak med. I agree!!! I was on such high doses that I felt like I was walking around with a shade over my eyes. Just living in a fog everyday!!Sorry to rant and vent. Its just some days are harder than others. This is not something that you expect to happen. I dont want to seem as if I am  complaining because I know there are other women and people out there that have many more challenges. But, sometimes its just hard and talking about it helps. Bp checks, medications, restricted diets.....it gets tiring!!!! I am happy to hear from some of you that are going through the same thing. The support makes me feel better!!! And, that I am not alone with this. Everyone keeps saying that this will go away ....will it?? Some people are telling me that this can go out 6 months. To boot, it's emotional because given that I had PP pre-e pretty severe we are not sure if I can carry more children and that is something emotional to deal with because we always wanted more than one. Thanks for listening. Sorry for the long vent!!!
