if you waited on solids until 6mos...

What did you feed them first?

I still have just under a month to go, but with the way my days are flying by, I figure I need to post while I can!  Also, I'm making my babyfood, so I think I might start if I ever have any free time so I'll be ready for them.

Thanks!

  • We started with rice cereal since it's highly unlikely they would be allergic to it.  We did this for quite a while until they got the hang of eating, I figured there was no use in wasting "real" food before they were totally ready.

  • Im waiting but just wanted to post and say I'm glad to see someone else waiting too!  I see so many other babies getting food already and I'm just not there with my girls.  Kudos to the waiters!!  :)

  • I waited until 6mths with the girls. Though it was really a little after 6 mths.  They were preemies and just not ready until now.  We tried cereal but Lauryn would throw up hours after eating so we skipped it altogether.  Went right to veggies and fruits.  I am alternating introducing them, veggie then fruit.  I am not making my own but I know plenty that do.  Good luck!

  • I fed my older DD rice cereal first, then oatmeal then started w/ sweet potatoes.  I had heard to introduce a sweeter veggie first after the cereals.  That said, when I start the girls I'm going right to oatmeal as its less constipating than rice.  We'll stick to just cereal until the get the hang of it and then move onto the food and then to table food!!!  Then maybe one day we can all eat together as a family.  Sigh.
  • We decided to skip the rice cereal since it isn't terribly nutritious and just went straight to oatmeal/multi-grain. We offered that once a day for four days, then tried sweet potato, peas, etc etc. Just a new fruit or vegetable every four days, in no  particular order.
  • We did green beans first, then avocado. After that I forget the exact order but we did sweet potatoes, peas, squash, bananas, apples, pears, peaches ... we introduced oatmeal after about a month, and rice cereal a few weeks after that.

  • We started rice cereal at 6 months and then moved to oatmeal.  Once I started fruits and veggies I started with bananas because I read somewhere they taste the most like breast milk (who knows if that's true).  I never found that whole thing about starting veggies first or they won't eat them to be true.  My kids ate everything when they were babies...it's now that they are toddlers that they won't eat anything.

  • we started a little after 6mos, but before 6mos adjusted... at our peds order to help with iron deficiency (in addition to poly-vi-sol).  so we did cereal, first rice, then oatmeal (it has the same consistency).  i really like earth's best brand.  we did cereal for several weeks.  next veggies, generally starting from least sweet, moving toward sweet.  so far we've gone in this order:  green beans, avocado, peas, butternut squash, sweet potato.

we make our own, and it doesn't take much time at all!  for green beans and peas we use organic frozen, everything else fresh.  microwave, hand blender,  freeze in icecube trays, and then i'm ready for many meals.

    have fun with it :)

  • We started with rice cereal.  They weren't really into eating for a while, even starting at 6 mo.  So we did that for a few weeks b/c they didn't really get how to put the food in their mouth, their tongue thrust reflex was still pretty strong.  After that we did sweet potaotes, then apples I think?  I cna't even remember now!
