Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

little gym vs my gym

We are going to enroll in one of these and wanted to see if anyone had experience with either (or both!). My Gym is cheaper and seems much more laid back about me bringing our new baby along. Plus in addition to the weekly class they have "free play" times throughout the week that we could go in and use the facility. Any opinions?? Thanks!

Re: little gym vs my gym

  • We did trials at both and ultimately chose little gym.  While I liked the extra play time with my gym, the fact that they had kids that could and would run over my daughter turned me off of it.

Reagan is now in the LIttle Birds class with little gym and the oldest is only 5 months older (not 2 years old)

They are also very helpful at little gym with helping DD start walking.

  • We go to My Gym - but we don't have a Little Gym locally so I can't comment on that.

We do love My Gym though - my DD has a blast everytime.  Like the pp said, free time (depending on the time or location) can be overcome by big kids running around, but honestly, my DD is so amused by older kids that it doesn't bother me.

I think the class that DD is in ranges from 6 months to 22 months (we go on a Saturday when they combine 2 age groups together) - and that range has never bothered us.   She loves playing with the little ones and trying to keep up with the older ones.

  • Thank you! Maybe I should do a trial class at both before I decide.
  • i used to work for my gym, so i'm biased. but i will tell you they are both different programs, so it's probably good to do a free trial at each. the main difference is w/the way the program is structured. little gym focuses more on the actual physical and technical aspects of the class. you will learn more "gymnastic" skills. where as that is also a core part of my gym, however the classes also incorporate a lot more singing, dancing, games, and puppet shows. personally i think my gym is better creativity wise.

and to address the PPs concern, at open gym it is open to kids of various ages, however an adult must be on the floor with them. you can't just drop your kid off. so really the big kids shouldn't topple the little ones. and a my gym instructor also has to be on the floor during free play to supervise and bring out fun activities, swings, etc. as for classtimes, they are specific for the age your child is, so no big kids allowed.

please let me know if you have any other my gym questions.

  • i was wondering this myself since so thanks for the post! i think we'll do the trial class at both and see what is best. i like the fact that you can pop in the little gym at the open playtimes. nice option for the winter especially!

We went during the age appropriate class (I am fairly certain). They only had the one instructor and he didn't seem to be supervising. We were constantly picking up DD to make sure she was safe. At the time, she was just starting to crawl and there were many kids who were running around.  I think it may have just been that specific location since i have heard wonderful stories about my gym previously. ITA that you should do a trial at each location.

  • Thanks again for the feedback! I think My Gym will be the way to go for us, but might as well do the trial classes at both....can't go wrong with a free class :)
