High-Risk Pregnancy

Artificial Sweetners?

Okay- so for the first 28 weeks of my pregnancy, I didn't eat anything with artificial sweetners (only real sugar- which MAY be a reason for my GD, actually...)

But now that I have GD, I find that most items that I eat have artificial sweetners already in them (ie- light yogurt, no sugar added jelly, etc etc...)

Should I be concerned about this?  I've been in the mind-set that the kinds of food I can eat have already been limited- so I shouldn't limit everything that sounds appetizing....

what are your thoughts??

Re: Artificial Sweetners?

  • i tried to stay away from them too before GD, but I just can't stay away entirely now.  But I do still try to limit my intake.  I don't drink diet soda, and I use some sugar-free jelly when i am eating a PBJ.  I will put splenda in my tea sometimes.  I do try to limit, but not eliminate entirely...

  • I specifically asked my OB about this in the begining (is it worse to have yogurt with full sugar or yogur with sweetener?) and he said that artificial sweetener is not going to hurt the baby, but Equal isn't good. I've cut back on what I use it in (coffee) and how many products I have with it (just yogurt and occasional diet coke). I'm guessing that you are far enough along that the impact will be even less.

  • From the studies I've read, the harmful effects of artificial sweeteners have been determined when testing lab animals with HUGE amounts of chemicals (as in, the equivalent of 1000 diet cokes a day or something like that).

Considering the fact that I've been extremely careful about anything that really can pose a risk to the baby (certain foods, alcohol, etc), I'm not worrying myself too much over a few weeks of artificial sweetener, especially if a Crystal Light helps keep me from falling off the GD wagon and downing a liter of coke on a bad day. :)

  • I'm still staying away from them.  My biochem professor refused to touch the stuff, and I really trusted his opinion about it.  I think, if I'm remembering correctly most of it has conjugated chloride rings in it.  I'm going with trying to satisfy my sweet cravings with fruit, and then balancing it with protein.  I don't trust the studies made by companies supplying the product.  (I also don't eat high fructose corn syrup though, if that tells you anything :) )
