I let the kids lead, and they did a great job. When they start to consistently drain bottles, I'd add a little more to each one and that (combined with solids as they got older), spaced out the bottles.
They both dropped about 8-10 oz when they started eating solid food.
Thats a great question. My LO is still at 6 bottles a day also, but only 5 ounces at a time. His reflux is still pretty bad, so if I try to increase the amount in his bottle at all he just spits it up. So he still eats about every 2.5 hours and STTN. My doc said that his eating schedule is fine and we'll just re-evaluate at his 9 month appointment.
ETA: so I think you're fine. Just follow their cues when they start to lose interest in or stop finishing their bottles.

My girls are just starting to get ready to drop one.... I think...they are not all that interested in their 9 am feeding and won't take more than 4 oz. then and again at the 11:30am feeding (which usually precedes "lunch")...of course as soon as I think I have things figured out they drain 6-6oz. bottles and want more one day...silly babies...
Pedi told us at their 9 mo visit that we should cap it at about 24 oz. a day -- at that time, they were getting 3 (7) oz bottles and 1 (8) oz. bottle. I now have them down to 3 (5.5) oz bottles and 1 (8) oz. -- I wanted them to "lead" when it came to dropping oz/bottles, but since they weren't, I ended up doing it for them. It really just forced them to increase their solids intake, and they're doing fine. I'm jealous of anyone whose baby is doing this on their own though!
Re: When are they *supposed to* drop a bottle
Wowza! Baby D is lucky if she squeezes in 3 8ozers. ONE OF US IS DOING SOMETHING HORRIBLY WRONG!
But really, I have no idea.
