Re: **GD Tuesday Check In**
Ugh - I cannot get my fasting numbers below 95! I was at 108 again this morning and I actually ate some protein with my snack last night.
Not sure what else to do.
What is the best/weirdest advice anyone has given you so far in terms of GD? I have a FB friend who is also an RN and she teaches glycemic index and she seems to think I should be following that instead of counting carbs.
Menu question:
Panera! I get the "you pick 2" with the broccoli cheddar soup and the chicken cobb salad (no gorgonzola, sub the asian sesame dressing) and get the whole grain baguette and my numbers have been excellent with that!
The best advice I have gotten so far is someone on here said to try cucumbers and cheddar cheese. It sounded really odd, but tastes good and I feel full after!!!!
Eating out is a problem, pretty much I chicken out and get a salad. Not that I have eaten really anywhere but panera. I got a greek salad and put some humus on it at home. It's easier to eat at home
I REALLY REALLY miss bagels, my DH and I went every Sunday
I also really miss OJ!
Question of the Day: What is the best/weirdest advice anyone has given you so far in terms of GD? Best advice- just to eat protein with carbs... and what may cause good numbers for you one week may cause higher numbers the next- you never know.
Menu: Eating out can be difficult- find any place good? And what did you eat? Went out a few times recently- and I've gotten a chicken fajita salad (number an hour later was under 100!), and I've had great luck with buffalo wings!! Numbers are always low... I just have a salad instead of the fries, and I split the buffalo chicken wrap with DH (So I ate i ONE soft tortilla)- number was 115 afterwards!! Bascially- just lots of salad lol
i know. me too....
Annie, if you could update my treatment info: diet and insulin
Eating out has been trial and error. I ate out yesterday, thought I had my carbs calculated....and came home with a BS 155. UGH. Very frustrating. But if I stick to salad, veggie, and some sort of meat, I'm usually okay.
The best advice I've gotten? Low carb bread! I love the Pepperidge Farms Carb Style.
And I miss OJ so badly I can taste it...
QOTD: Best advice was beware of the hand sanitizer and make sure if you are using alcohol wipes to let it dry on your finger completely before testing!
Menu: I try to look up the nutrition facts before we go places and that seems to be going well. My favorites right now are taco bell (2 soft tacos at lunch, 3 at dinner) and chipotle (carnitas soft taco plate for dinner). Everywhere else I've managed to find something I can eat. Last night we went to Applebees and I 'guessed' the carbs - sugars an hour later were 136. I was a bit sad, but what do you do?
Best Advice - Have protein w/your evening snack to help your fasting number.
Menu - I'm a vegetarian, which makes it a bit harder. Whole Foods is great - I get tofu, some kind of grain salad and veggies. Yesterday I had a grilled eggplant sandwich from our cafeteria downstairs. Eggplant has a good amount of protein - plus there was cheese on top. I just took the bread off the top to make it an open faced sandwich, and two hours later my number was 102.
me too! try seitan if you havent already- low in carbs High in protien. I make a salad with may and celery and put it in a pita. a great lunch- i ate if for a few days and my sugars were in the 80's! also, if you have a trader joes by you- that helps too and cheaper than whole foods! (which i love but so costly!)
i dont know about you but all the cheese and protien sometimes gets to me. blah.
ALL UPDATES WILL BE MADE FOR NEXT WEEK!
What is the best/weirdest advice anyone has given you so far in terms of GD?: All the grocery shopping help! Weight watchers bread, Special K Protein Plus cereal, low sugar oatmeal, and cauliflower recipes to substitute for potatoes.
I also have some advice to add regarding hamburger buns. DH and I were shopping yesterday and he was comparing the flattened "low carb" buns to regular ones. The flat ones had the same amount of carbs as the regular whole wheat ones so we ended up getting the regular whole wheat ones instead, about 15 carbs per bun. Double check stuff that's labeled "low carb", it's not always worth it!
Menu: Eating out can be difficult- find any place good? And what did you eat?: I've eaten out tons since getting "the beetus." We had family in town my first weekend testing so there was no easing into it! Mexican is a great choice (hard shell tacos are better with me than soft shell). I've also had luck with seafood choices, and of course wraps are great for lunch (I go to jason's deli a few times a week).
Thanks for the tips!! Glad to know there is another vegetarian out there:) I also ordered a vegetarian diabetic friendly cookbood - which I'm hoping will shake up my options.
I know what you mean about cheese - I used to love it - now sometimes I can hardly stand the sight of it!
Question of the Day: What is the best/weirdest advice anyone has given you so far in terms of GD?
From my friend's mom, who works in the NICU. "Just dilute your juice and stop being paranoid."
Menu: Eating out can be difficult- find any place good? And what did you eat? We are currently being recluses since DH has been working nights lately, so no eating out for us
Kellyrenee- Real name- Kelly. EDD- April 4th.
I'm still somewhat in denial with whether or not I actually have GD. My 1 hr number was 136, and I was sent for the 3 hr, but couldn't handle that disgusting amount of sweetness. I still haven't been able to talk to my doc or NP about it, so we will see what happens with it all next week. I'm hoping that my numbers stay good, and my diet is just a low carb/sugar diet, no drugs, and testing 4 times a day.
Question of the Day: What is the best/weirdest advice anyone has given you so far in terms of GD?
I haven't really gotten too much advice... but people asking what GD was - so I feel like I've explained it about 100 times in a week.
Menu: Eating out can be difficult- find any place good? And what did you eat?
So far I've eaten out twice - Once at Spaghetti Factory where I was too chicken to try anything but soup and salad so it worked out good. I did eat like 3 bites of the Spumoni Ice Cream though and #'s were still good. I also ate at Mustard Seed (asian/chinese food) and was a little more adventurous - got the Hot & Spicy Chicken and Peppers, it was delish! It came with a side salad and white rice (only option) so I just ate 1/2 the meal and got decent a decent #. I ate the rest for dinner that night

Eating out is a real big challenge I just try to get a garden salad with some sort of meat, but have had taco bell soft taco (2) for lunch and numbers are fine.
Hi girls! Just checking in today... I have no good answers for either of the questions, lol.
O13 March Siggy Contest: AnArChY (I do what I want- & I want FOUR GIFS!)
I guess the best advice I've gotten so far has been from my nutrionist & that would be just finding something that I can eat more of instead of something small.
The best place I've found to eat out is Joe's Crab Shack. I have no idea how many carbs I ate but my numbers 2 hours later was 79. I ate a house salad with ranch & a classic steam pot but I gave the potatoes to my husband.
Question of the Day: What is the best/weirdest advice anyone has given you so far in terms of GD? Always eat protein with any meal/snack!
Menu: Eating out can be difficult- find any place good? And what did you eat? We really enjoy eating out. At Wendy's I've gotten the chili and a small fry and I always have good numbers after that - around 110. For my splurge, there's a local restaurant we go to and I get the belgian waffle with scrambled eggs and bacon. I just make sure to use the sugar free syrup. My number is usually around 120!
Hi ya Ladies...
It has been 4 days since I've started up with the testing for GD. My fasting number is still in the high range, but I think it is starting to go down a little bit as I learn more about it. So far the best advice I've gotten regarding GD is to experiment with the food a bit because some food will trigger higher numbers than others. So basically, look at what you have and want.
I went out today to Taco Del Mar and had two tacos there. With some rice and beans also.. I usually prefer to eat vegetarian over meat of any kind. I will be checking into some of the menus of the different places around here for their food. I do enjoy eating out once in a while.. I know it will be something I will miss during upcoming 9 weeks!
AFM? What surprised me is that my doc wants me to continue working on the food and trying to bring my numbers down. So NO MEDS! Whew!! I was worried about that..She was happy that I had lost a pound since our last visit two weeks ago. But I'm thrilled that I will be able to get my ultrasound in two weeks - to make sure that my LO isn't toooo big. My measurement was 33 cm today and I am 30 weeks and 4 days today.... am I that large?
