Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Kind of annoying 9-month checkup.....

My doctor aggravates me because he doesn't really say much unless your chikd is bleeding profusely or something dramatic like that. For example, my DD weighed in at 15.8lbs, which is below 5th percentile. I figured he'd say something about that, but nope. Then, I ask him how much I should feeding DD and he replies, "Oh, whenever." He's Captain Vague and it drives me crazy. MIL was with me and she even commented on how he doesn't say much. He is part of a group, and there is definitely a doctor I favor out of the three, but the office won't let you make an appointment with any one doctor in particular.

Re: Kind of annoying 9-month checkup.....

  • that would frustrate the hell out of me.  i love being able to see one doctor in particular.  i don't think i'd be able to deal with that?  if it were me, i'd probably find a new pedi.

  • That's annoying. DS was at the 8th percentile at his 9 month check up and my pedi wasn't too concerned either because of his activity level/meeting milestones earlier than average. Maybe that's the case for your LO too?

  • My pedi was sort of that way too, and we are done with her. We are moving onto a new pedi.  If my gut says that something isn't right, I move on!  GL!

  • Does he answer your questions to his vague statements at least? I would find a new pedi.
  • I'm part of a group too and I got a doctor I don't really like dealing with even thought I made the appt. with one I wanted to see. He wasn't Capt. Vague, but he said a few things that my LO's "regular" doc wouldn't say. (regular meaning the one the see more than the other ones.)
  • Sucks you didn't get answers! I'm in the same boat as you in terms of DD's weight, but at least my Dr. gave us some ideas! DD was 15 lbs 3 oz at 9 months... which knocked her off the chart.  Dr. asked how many bottles she was getting (4-5 28-32 oz/day)... she said it was too much milk and she wasn't getting enough food.  We dropped to 3 bottles (plus a night feed if she wakes) and DD is eating a lot of food now and was 15 lbs 11 oz 2 weeks later... seems to be working for her!
  • I have been playing around with the idea of leaving the group, I guess I just haven't had the motivation to do it.

Another reason I don't like this doc-  I go in for DD's 2 month apointment. At that point I was pumping and supplementing with formula. It was a very touchy subject with me because my milk supply was low and DD was a preemie so her sucking reflex wasn't completely developed and her mouth was too small (the lactation consultant told me that!). Anyway, he asks me what she eats, formula or breast milk and I tell him both. And with a very snotty attitude (which is odd for him, usually he's monotone), he goes, "Well WHY?!" and very obviously shows displeasure with this. I left the doctor's office in tears.

The funny thing about all of this is that I went there when I was a kid and I loved all the doctors. Now not so much.....

  • I was definitely considering giving her more food and a little less formula seeing as he says I can feed her "whenever".

  • I would be worried - (about the pedi) - Maybe see if you can e-mail in to a different one or speak with one?! - DS was in the 2%ile at his 9month and Pedi put him on a strict monitored diet for 6 weeks to make sure it wasn't a thyroid or other issue. It wasn't but he wanted to make sure. He said there could be major problems in the future if we didn't try and figure it out now (such as an allergy to the formula or foods he was eating)
