difference between obgyn and midwife?

So I just found out today that my insurance does not cover midwives only obgyns. What is the difference? TIA ladies!

Re: difference between obgyn and midwife?

  • I have the option for either at Kaiser - the main distinction is that an OBGYN is an MD, ie, has gone to medical school.  The midwives at Kaiser are CNM (certified nurse midwife) so they have nursing school and specialized midwife training/certificate.  So a CNM for instance, can't do a C-section for you, you would have to go with an MD.

  • It's not just a certificate, midwives have advanced practice nursing degrees, pretty much a masters degree.  They have extensive training in women's health care including labor and delivery and can manage birth, natural and medicated, assist in c sections and provide health care for women throughout their lives, not just in childbirth.  They can write prescriptions as well :)

  • An OB's training/background is surgical.
