High-Risk Pregnancy

Lupus

I had a missed m/c back in July and a D&C in August. Since then my dr has said it looks like I have some sort of autoimmune problem; he thinks this because I sometimes experience swollen, stiff joints and rosy, inflamed cheeks. They ran blood tests for arthritis, which all came back negative. I now suspect a food allergy or lupus.?

Anyone else have any experience TTC with either condition? Anyone experience SAL after being diagnosed with lupus? What course of action did you take? Did anyone use baby aspirin? I am starting to think I may have m/c'd due to my autoimmune disorder and want to prevent it from happening again.

TIA! :)

Re: Lupus

  • I was diagnosed with lupus about a year before I got pregnant with my daugther.  With that first pregnancy, I started daily Lovenox injections and took a baby aspirin every day from about week 8 (when I first saw the peri) until 6 weeks post delivery.  With my current pregnancy, I started the daily Lovenox and baby aspirin as soon as I tested positive with the home pregnancy test.  My first pregnancy was a complete surprise, otherwise I would have consulted with a peri prior to getting pregnant.  If you are diagnosed with lupus or some other autoimmune disease, I would suggest that you see a peri prior to starting to try again so that you have a plan of action and gain some peace of mind.  Depending on what your bloodwork shows, in addition to increased risk of miscarriage, there can be other issues.  However, they will know exactly what to screen for and what to do.  To end on a good note, I am happy to report that both of my pregnancies have gone very well.  My daugther arrived unexpectedly at 34 weeks, but was healthy and is now a perfectly healthy and happy 2yo.  I am 35 weeks with #2 and everything is looking great.  Good luck to you and please feel free to ask me any questions.  The diagnosis itself is a lot to take in, not to mention pregnancy on top of that.

  • I have SLE and another autoimmune condition.  I take baby aspirin and plaquenil and have had one flare so far this pregnancy.  I did have a prior loss, but it was unrelated to lupus, strangely enough.

I would second the recommendation to consult with an MFM or perinatologist before getting pregnant again, so you can have some peace of mind going into it.

Feel free to email me if you want, too (or PM, however that works) - I usually check the PgAL board if you want to find me.
