Adoption

argument with 2 co workers today!

Today I was asked by my co worker, who knows about our adoption, what we learned in our car seat class, because she knows DH and I took one, in regards to when to flip kids to forward facing.

Now, I know this is a touchy subject with some people- but I told her what I learned- to keep rear facing as long as possible- pretty much as far as your convertible seat allows for rear facing. She flipped out and told me, that I was not a parent and wait until I have kids and when they are screaming because they are rear facing I will flip my kids around as soon and I can, which would be 1 year old, 20 lbs.

Another co worker who happened to over hear our conversation- who just happened to move his 9 month into a convertible seat over the weekend, said he cannot wait to move her front facing in 3 months. I was getting so mad because I really disagree with forward facing that early (sorry if that offends anyone)

But I think what really upset me was being told that I wasn't a parent therefore my opnions were wrong, and that I was asked about this, but because people didnt like what I said then I'm wrong. Like I have any control over the safety standards and the crash tests!!

Our Journey from two to three! 3 IUI's, 2 IVF's, decided to move to foster/adopt. 12/24/2009 Baby C born, 2/1/2010 placed with us, 5/17/2011 Adoption final- we are finally a forever family! Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • I'm sorry you have such a dumb co-worker!  Not only did she insult you, but she did it after asking about what you learned in a class!

Can someone enlighten me as to why there is a big debate over rear vs front facing?  Why is front facing after 12 months bad?  I really don't know....

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • It's like she set you up to fail.

  • Wow, that is so crazy...it seems like your co-worker kind of set you up here.

I def don't judge anyone for turning their child around as soon as they were able...but my DD doesn't give us any issues with RF and we hope to do so as long as possible!  We specifically invested in a seat that allows extended RF, so why not take advantage of that.

KGS...google extended rearfacing...there is SO much info out there on it!!

  • I'm sorry :(  That is annoying. Especially when they solicit YOU for advice.
Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! • I was more upset that she asked then got upset with me- I was not passing any judgment- I just gave the info that I was given- I was not going to lie. It's not like I said, OMG you have to have you kid rear facing, I was just giving the info I was given!

  • oh that is just sad.. so when her child is kicking and screaming for a candy bar is she going to give that to them to?  just because they want something doesn't mean it is best for them!

btw, in sweeden they are keeping kids rearfacing till 40lbs!! they have better car seats, but they found it is safer!

  • Sadly, people just do what they want when it comes to parenting, thinking they know better than "childless experts" ?I've heard this several times, telling me that I just follow "random" advice and do not think for myself. ?Sure, that "childless expert" who conducted those crash tests showing how dangerous FF really is, doesn't know anything about safety, and these parents do know. ?I'm the weirdo with an 18 month old rear facing and an almost 5 year old in a 5 point harness car seat, not a booster. ?I do not care, and all I say is "safety first" ?and mention that my pedi supports how we raise our kids. ? Unfortunately, I do judge these people for not following ?safety guidelines, and I hate that about myself! ?I judge those who judge me, how enlightening!

  • I'm sorry that they were so rude to you.  They shouldn't have asked you if they didn't want to know.  We kept Ben rear facing until he was about 22 months old.  He is so tall that no matter what we did, his legs were really cramped and he told me that they were hurting.   I don't really feel like a bad mom for turning him around though at that time, but I definitely wouldn't do it at 1 year.

  • I would have just looked at her and said..."You asked...nutter..." and then walked off.
  • That is definitely annoying (and rude)!  We plan on RF as long as possible!  I made sure to buy convertible seats with a high RF weight so that we can extend RF!
