Two Under 2

2 birthdays in 1!

So my oldest bday is May 20th and my youngest is May 26th...we will be combining their birthdays forever I am sure...Seeing that my oldest will be 2 and my youngest 1...how does this all work. Do I go with 2 themes or just 1? 2 cakes? How do I word the invitations....gifts for both are unecessary, we just want to celebrate with our friends...I want each child to get the attention they "deserve" on their bdays and not ever feel cheated...have any of you ever dealt with this? TIA.

Re: 2 birthdays in 1!

  • My nephews birthdays are close the 6th and the 15th and they have always had birthday parties together.  It's actually easier for everyone since we only have to come once...plus easier for you since you only have to cook once :)  My SIL makes two different cakes, in two different flavors but they are smaller cakes.  One kid opens gifts (usually the one with the bithday on the 6th) and then the other.  It works out really well.

  • Dr. Seuss Thing 1 and Thing 2 would be fun!
  • My sister and I are four days less than two years apart.  We had the same theme at each birthday party (always combined) but we each got to pick our favorite cake.  I always had devil's food and my sis had angel food.  As a kid I wasn't always thrilled about sharing (since I always shared EVERYTHING with my sister) but now that I am an adult I understand the practicality for my parents and guests.  You could do different themes but my sister and I were always into the same things so I think it was just as easy to share that as well.  Good luck!
  • While it's not exactly the same my dad and I are one day apart, DH and I are 8 Days apart and DS #1 is the day before DH.

What I would do at least while they are young, is one theme. Let them pick out their own cake and one aspect of the theme, say color, activities, gift bags ect.  To make things special for each of them play up their actual birthday as a family.  From morning to night make it all about them, a special breakfast, special lunch, special activity (if you can afford to do a sitter for a couple hours or drop off the non Bday kid with Grandma for a few hours to take the Bday kid out for some one on one time) and then what ever they want for dinner.  Also do family gifts on their actual birthday.

  • My brother and sister are 2 years apart but have the same birthday.  When celerating with family, my mom always had 2 small cakes so they could each pick the theme and they had birthday parties on the same day/time - one upstairs and one downstairs or outside so they could each have their own friends, themes, etc.  Or if they get along and have a lot of the same friends, you could do one big party but I think it will really depend on your kids and I would make sure to do something extra special on the day of each childs actual b-day to make it special.
