3rd Trimester

Hydronephrosis?

I asked this on the 2nd tri board but no one seemed to have any experience.  Anyone have their baby diagnosed with hydronephrosis at their 20 wk. u/s?  Did it clear up on its own by third tri?  What have your doctors told you?  I've talked to my MWs, done the research, but I'm just looking to hear from anyone that has had any experience with it.  Thanks.

Re: Hydronephrosis?

  • My baby was diagnosed with Hydronephrosis in the left kidney with a dialated ureter at the 18 wk u/s. I am now 39 weeks and unfortunately it did not go away. My OB/GYN office had us meet with a Urologist at Children's hospital and they were great. They told us that once the baby is born they will be giving the baby prophylactic antibiotics until he will be seen by the pediatric Urologist at about 3 weeks old. At 3 weeks old they will do an ultrasound and a VCUG (a specific x-ray that examines the urinary tract) to figure out if there is a blockage in the ureter or kidney or if the baby has reflux. They said that sometimes the hydronephrosis goes away on its own and some times the baby may need surgery. They made us feel like this was not such a big deal, since it is only in one kidney, at least you have another kidney that functions. Does your baby have this in one or both Kidneys? I heard if they see this in a early u/s that a lot of times the Hydronephrosis goes away in a subsequent ultrasound. I really wish you luck with this. I am just going to deal with this once the baby is here.

  • I had it with my pg with my DD.  Mine cleared up after birth. I am okay and so is my Son this time around. I have my high risk OB check. I hear it is very normal for boys to get it in the womb. And it usually clears up no problem.  Good luck!
  • My baby boy was diagnosed with Bilateral Hydronephrosis (both kidneys) at the 20 week ultrasound. My doctor ordered a Level 2 (at the high risk OB office) at 25 weeks to follow up. At the 25 week ultrasound, his left kidney is still slightly dilated, but the right kidney is just fine now! So, since the dilation of the left kidney was mild (upper limit of normal is 4mm, and his measured 5 mm), they will do an ultrasound at 35 weeks now to follow up.

From what the doctor says, this is a common diagnosis in ultrasounds and most times, it will clear up before or right after birth.  Even if it is still present after birth (they will do an ultrasound on the baby around 3 weeks, I think) it is still easily treatable with antibiotics.  Worst case scenario would involve surgery, but I'm not too sure on the details of that.  I'm hoping that it clears up before the 35 week checkup.

    Hope this helps!
