Mastitis/clogged duct HALP!!

I have a sore bump that is all red around it. I also have a red streak going all the way up my breast from the bump. I just read on a website that I need to see a doctor immediately. Does anyone have any experience with this? My insurance sucks ass and it is really hard to find a doctor to see.

Re: Mastitis/clogged duct HALP!!

  • Sounds like mastitis to me. I got it and had to go to the ER b/c it was on the weekend. It sucks but you will need to get checked out and given antibiotics. Once I got on the antibiotics, I felt immensely better and the redness/tenderness went away.

In the meantime, you can use a warm compress on the knot, especially while nursing. That helps. GL!

  • If it is mastitis, go to the dr as soon as possible.  I have had mastitis 3 times (once with Jackson, twice with DS#1).  When left untreated, you will get a high fever and feel like you have the flu.  It is not pleasant at all.  It was so bad the second time I had it that I ended up in the ER because I could not wait until the next morning with my OB/GYNs office opened.  They will treat with antibiotics and you will feel so much better in a couple of days.
  • Sorry to hear that you are going thru this right now. I had this not to long ago and I ended up in the emergency room.  I know there are things you can do at home for mastitis, but nothing worked for me.  I went to the emegency room they gave me a shot of morphine for the pain and gave me antibiotics and it helped.  But it was PAIN and it was horrible.  GL!!  (I ended up with horrible chills and a high fever.  Oh and flu like symptoms..yucky!)

  • I called my Dr. explained the symptoms and they just sent an antibiotic to the pharmacy. I didn't have to go in.
  • Ditto the pp advice. Also, I'm not sure if you're nursing your LO or not but try to get him to nurse as much as possible which will help.  It might hurt or be uncomfortable but it will help you from getting engorged which can make the situation worse.  Drink lots of fluid as well. Hope you start feeling better!
