So when my sister was pregnant with my niece her and my BIL were picking out names. My sister liked Ella. BIL vetoed it because apparently Ella means "come here" in Greek. BIL is Greek.
So they named her Sophia. I swear when my sister told me her name, the first person I thought of was Estelle Getty on the Golden Girls.
Re: About the name Ella
Since my DD's name is Ella, I have to answer this. I wanted her name to have some sort of meaning. I've never heard of it meaning "come here" in Greek lol.
ETYMOLOGY:
The name Ella has a different meaning in quite a few different languages listed below:
- English: a variation of Eleanor and Ellen meaning "beautiful fairy"
- French: "Medieval given all"
- Greek: "light", "torch", or "bright light"

I like the name, but probably won't use it. My friend wants to use it if she has a girl.
My mom's name is Ella, so I think it is a beautiful name. My sister named one of her children a derivitiatve of Ella, so that is also why I couldn't use it.
