Gals near Florida Panhandle...

We usually go to Destin every summer around May-June.  This year our town is hosting the World Equestrian Games and we are expecting 600,000-1 million additional visitors in September so I am thinking that is a perfect time to get the heck out of dodge, and maybe rent our house out...if I am brave enough to do it.  I was wondering if it is foolish to travel there during hurricane season or if its really no big deal.  We won't have travel insurance on the rental so I didn't want to get down there and have bad weather, but I figured it would be fine.  What do you think, and the weather will still be in the high 80's toward the end of September, right?

Also, we were thinking of trying some place different and were thinking of Gulf Shores in Alabama, or anywhere between there and Destin.  What places around there are low key and not crazy commercial?

  • Orange Beach and Gulf Shores are definitely low key.  Hurricane season is always a toss-up, but all the places down here typically give refunds for hurricanes and tropical storms.  It's been quiet the last two years.  And yes, it will still be pretty hot in September.

  • I live in Panama City Beach.  It'll definately still be hot in September and that is the peak of hurricane season.  I'd just check the hotels or FRBO owners for their refund policy.  PCB and Destin are definately commercial.  I'm not really sure about anything west of Destin, but St. George Island and Cape San Blas are very low key, but not a whole lot to do there as far as restaurants and activities go.  We love love love Seaside/Grayton Beach area though, which is just east of Destin.
