Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Ferber Question

Hello girls.  I have been debating doing Ferber for my 11 month old son.  We are getting ready to wean and had been exploring my options.  Anyway, I was  browsing through an issue of 'Parenting' and they mentioned the Ferber method.  Then in parenthesis, after mentioning Dr. Ferber they wrote (which he now thinks his method is over and misused).  Anyone know anything about him thinking his own method is overused?  Unless he was just meaning people are doing it wrong and let thier babies cry too long for too many nights? I can understand the misused. Anyway, just thought that was interesting and didn't know he felt that way.

Re: Ferber Question

  • i'm not sure.

i can tell you we did basically the Ferber method using the Sleep Easy Solution book and DS went from waking every 30-60 mins to sttn in one night. We had a lot of success with it!

I talks about Ferber AND Sears re-thinking their methods.

  • Ferber worked well for us.  We had 15minutes of crying once and that was it...I guess C was just ready for it!  I think Ferber gets a bad rep (IMO).....it givves a guideline, but stresses that you adjust the crying time.  I don't know, I Just think of course there is going to be some crying if you are taking a kid who is used to be rocked (or whatever method) to sleep and teaching them to sleep on his/her own.  I'd probably cry a little too haha!
  • We've already sleep trained but I'm reading Ferber now (we used SleepEasy) and he does say in his book that if your baby's sleep does not improve using his method after a week then you need to explore other possible causes of the sleep disturbances.I also suspect that many people don't actually read the book and instead just put their baby to bed, close the door, and don't go back in until morning (which he specifically states in his book is cruel and difficult for the child). Perhaps this is what he means by "misused"?

  • Hmmm....interesting! Thanks for the responses.  I would never judge anyone who used Ferber (it REALLY seems to work!) but I'm just not quite sure if it's for us.  I've thought and thought about it but my little guy is just not independent at all and freaks out if I leave the room so I don't think he would handle this very well.  I don't know though, after I wean him off of nursing I may have no other choice!
