Not sleeping on Zoloft.

I've been on Zoloft about 2 mos. and still can't sleep. I talked to my dr. about it, but since I'm still BFing I can't take the med. she would normally prescribe. Is there anything you've found that helps? Can I take an over the counter sleep aid, like Tylenol PM or something?

I would ask your doc what if any otc meds you could take with it.  Also remember that no sleep can make you pretty out of it too....I don't function without proper sleep so I personally would ask for a different medication. JMO. Good luck and I hope you get some sleep.

Zoloft is the only med I can take while BFing, and other than the sleep it's working great. The energy it gives me counteracts the tiredness, so while I can't sleep I also don't feel all that tired. I just don't like the weirdness I feel at night. I'll ask my doc about the otc meds when she's back in the office. Thanks!

I am on 75mg of zoloft during my second trimester and I too am not sleeping and feeling weird at night.  My OB gave me xanax which does help but I feel bad about taking it every night even though I'm only sleeping 2-4 hours total.  She also said I could try Ambien which is supposed to be safer during pregnancy.  And I did try Benadryl which really didn't do anything but it is listed on the pregnancy meds that are safe.  Insomnia is supposed to be very common but if you go more then a couple of nights without any sleep I would definitely call your doctor.  Your body has to rest.

Thanks ladies. I'm already taking it first thing in the morning to lessen the effects at night. And actually I think it's safer to take sleep aids while pg than while BFing, because they don't cross the placenta but do go into BM. So, it looks like I'll just have to wait to ask my doc about it again. I think I'll start taking my shower at night instead of morning to relax me and try more of a bedtime routine to wind down slowly and see if that will help.

Google different medicines and breastfeeding and you will see there are other options.  Or talk to a LC or someone from La Letche League. I took prozac but a very small dose and had no sleep issues.  Zoloft made me have severe insomnia and I was wired all day too. I also had other weird side effects while on it so my MW gave me Prozac. Prozac is the third safest drug to take (I forget the 2nd) but since I had a tiny dose it was fine while BFing. 

And yes, while on Zoloft you can take Advil PM. Call your pharmacist and tell them you are BF'ing and cant sleep and they will help you find something that will work.
