Transitioning to a cup?

I have read in several different parenting books/magazines about introducing a regular cup at 6 months instead of the bottle or sippy cup. I'm not sure if we will do this, but I'm just wondering if anyone else is going to? How successful have you been with the cup? And also, do you just mix up the formula (or use breastmilk) and put it in a cup?

Re: Transitioning to a cup?

  • I did this with DD#1.  Around 5 months I started giving her sips of water in a cup while she was in the bath tub b/c she was trying to fall over to drink water.  By 6.5 months she would drink water and watermelon juice from a cup when I handed her the cup.  THe "challenge" was when she sat in the highchair I'd have to hand her the cup occasionally to let her sip, rather than leave the sippy there...it was easy.  The biggest benefit was then she had no problem transitioning to any sippy I gave her when I intro'd the sippy sometime around 7 or 8 months..

I am doing this with my 6 month old twins and DD loves the cup and water, but DS hates water so won't.  I make my babyfood so pump milk to thin out purees so will pump a little extra for the cup for him.

  • I've let him have a cup with a straw for the past month to just get used to it but he rarely drinks out of it. Just the last week I've been trying the cup alone. I'm surprised how well he's doing with it already.

Of course DS is only 6 months but I'm going to try and keep working with him on just using a cup and sippy with the straw when needed. I've just been putting water in it, no BM just yet.
