Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

If you do a "time-out" for your toddler

Where is the designated spot?  My child is too young to sit for a period of time, but this biting thing is getting ridiculous and the only thing that seems to affect him is removing him from the general area we are in.  I don't know if I should always try to place him in the same area or what.

  • I put him in his booster seat at the kitchen table. I pull the booster seat away from the table so he gets the idea that he is not there to eat.
  • Loading the player...
  • When we use time-out we sit Olivia on the bottom step of our stairs.  Good luck!!

  • My brother had these mats like a welcome mat, that said "time out spot" or something like that.  One on each floor and one in their kitchen because he said they always got in trouble in there.   The great thing about those is you can move them where ever you need but it provides some consistency.  All guesses, this is my first kiddo :)
  • Usually a corner, away from distractions and "offensive" area.

  • we have a spare dining chair that we sit her in. It's pub style so it's taller than the norm and she will not climb down like she would from any other chair. I stand nearby just in case...but she won't try to get down.

I have heard though that people get a booster style highchair to use for timeouts only. The cant leave but they are not associating the highchair with punishment.

  • In her pack-n-play, with no toys or other entertainment.

The time out pad. They sell these on babysteals all the time. $14.99

  • We have an overstuffed chair in our bedroom that isn't used for anything and is very accessible from the rest of the house.  It's not ideal but, we just really started with the time out this weekend.

  • We have a short hallway that leads from the front doorway to the living room.  I sit him in there, on the floor so that he can't see the living room/tv/toys.  I sit next to him for the 60 sec.

  • We have a little stool in kitchen that I put DS on when he needs a timeout.  It seems to work pretty well.

That's a good idea to sit beside him.  Does he cry while he is in time out?  Larsen is a drama queen and he cries the minute I set his butt on the floor.

  • I've heard of taking a yoga mat and cutting it in a 3-4 squares.  Keep on in the car/diaper bag, and one on each floor of your house (or specific rooms) to use for a time-out mat.

Also, when I was teaching pre-school, we always did time-out in an area where the child could see the other children/activity, but not close enough to interact.  That way, the child could see what they were missing out on...obviously if you only have 1 child, this isn't exactly the same, but putting them where they can still see their toys, etc. shows that they did something that means they're not able to play for a small amount of time.  Does that make sense??

I like this idea.  They're always on sale at TJMaxx.

I've just been putting DD in her crib with the lights on and the door open.

  • I put him in the corner.  He sits there for 1-2 mins.  He's so cute in time out.  He looks pathetic and guilty.
