Babies: 9 - 12 Months

When did you start rice cereal?

I have been thinking a lot about this lately.I remember 12 years ago starting Eli on rice cereal when he was 2 months old - he was so big, and so hungry! He loved it and it helped a lot with his ravenous appetite.Jasper is a very different baby. He is 14 weeks old tomorrow, and I realized I had no idea what the prevailing knowledge is now on when to start solids with babies. I read Dr. Sears, and some pages from the UK, and it looks like 4-6 months old is the time to start, and not recommended earlier than 17 weeks of age because of the baby's delicate gut and allergy concerns. I remember it used to be 6 weeks of age that they recommended starting rice cereal! What did you do? Every baby is different!

  • Just shy of six months.  My pedi recommended six months.

  • We just started a few days ago.  For the first couple of days, DD wasn't sure what to do and just made terrible "this is poison!" faces.  Today she ate her first full serving (all that I made, anyhow) of it and actually ate the majority of it.  Our pediatrician recommends starting around 6 months, but no sooner than 4 months.
  • We started at 4 mos.  DS is FF, is a horrible sleeper and was underweight for a long time.  I assume I would start around the same time, maybe 5 mos, for baby 2, unless there is something specific that sways us.

  • In addition to the digestive system reccomendations, you are also supposed to wait until baby can hold their head up and have good control.  A good indicator is if they can sit in an exersaucer.  Then you know they will be able to swallow it without difficulty.
