Why is this word offensive?

Why is the word "gyped" offensive?  Am I missing something?

From what I've always understood, it's a slur against gypsies. Since "gyped" is basically said to mean that you are ripped off, it's saying that gypsies ripped (rip) people off.

ahhh, that makes sense.  Why didn't I think of that?  I'll try to stop using that word.  It never even occured to me that it was a slur against someone else.

I never even heard that word before so I looked it up and this is what I found.

Um, no. It's offensive to imply that all gypsies are thieves, thus the phrase "gyped." Kinda like saying "that's so gay". In that context the synonym for gay is "bad/wrong/stupid", implying that being gay is bad/wrong, stupid. These usages hurt some people's feelings.
