Methodist Hospital In Medical Center

Has anyone ever been there or delivered there? That's why my doc delivers and am just curious what it's like...

Thanks in advance!

I delivered Sarah there a little over a year ago.  The staff is great, but I can't say I had a typical experience since we upgraded to one of the 10 South suites for 3 days.  I don't know how the normal rooms are, but they have been under construction for awhile, so it depended if you got a new or old room.  They may be done at this point.

If you can swing the extra money, the suites are awesome!  Ask to see them on the hospital tour.  You have your own staff that only serves those 8 rooms, your own chef prepared meals that you order off a menu, a stocked mini fridge with fruit and cheese, water and drinks that they restock any time you ask, and fabulous service.  Sarah never had to go to the nursery - even when she needed to be under the bili lights - they brought everything to us.  All her testing was even done in our room.

Wow... sounds great. How much extra was it to get a suite? I wonder if my insurance would pay for any portion of a suite.

Do you know if the regular rooms were private or shared?

I had clinical there and I believe they were going to make all the rooms private.  I heard about the suites on the 10th floors.  I am also delivering there, but I do not have choice, since my OB only delievers there.  I have heard good things from other co workers who delivered there and they have had good experiences.

All the rooms are private.  It is pricey for the suites - I want to say it was $300/night ABOVE the regular room price.  Most insurance will pay whatever the reg room price is - you are responsible for the upgrade costs (due before you leave the hospital)

I just toured Methodist and I believe the suites are now in the $400 a night range.   The regular rooms are now all private rooms.   It seems like a nice hospital, though in the tour we were told the baby would have to go to the nursery after birth, and that visit could be a few hours, for check up.  When I asked how long you could have the baby with you after birth the guide hedged and said generally, as long as everything is alright with the child you can have an hour or two with baby after birth but if they feel something is wrong with the baby it could be much shorter.

One thing I've heard from different people, is if you want to breastfeed you can have your ped write a prescription for "bonding time".   I'm not sure how that would work at Methodist but it would be worth a try.

I had no problem breastfeeding after delivery.  They do not move you to your post partum room for an hour or so after delivery and baby is with you unless something is wrong.  Sarah's heartrate was decelerated during delivery (click on my birth story in siggy) and they still did not take her to the nursery right after delivery.  They did have a bunch of specialists in the room to check her out right after, but since she was fine, they gave her right back to me.  They took her to the nursery when they got ready to move me, but she was back with me by the time they had me in my postpartum room.

Methodist does encourage birth plans.  Have one and give it to your nurse when you are put into a delivery room.   If you want to breast feed and want to see a lactation consultant while you are in the hospital - put it in there!

I will definetly put that in the birth plan! Is that something I just bring with me when I go into labor or will they have it on file already? (This is obviously my first time lol)

Thanks, ladies, for your responses! I'm looking forward to my delivery experience at Methodist.

I would give one to your doctor so he/she has it in their file, but take another copy with you and give it to the actual nurse that is assigned to your labor/delivery/recovery room.  The nurse will read it and go over it with you, then put it in the hospital file that will follow you to your postpartum room.

My babies were delivered there (though it was a c-section so I didn't spend any time in the L&D rooms).

The staff was excellent - my delivery nurse was awesome as were the NICU nurses that were in there in case the babies needed them.

We had a large private room we ended up having to wait for a bit longer in recovery, but since we would have to fit in 2 babies, they had us wait.  I think all the rooms are private though.

I was very pleased with all the services we received.  Everyone was helpful and caring.
