Alternative.... don't buy a baby specific dresser... go for a short 3 drawer dresser that you can get anywhere and strap a changing pad on top to make it a changing table. You can also look at Ikea if you have one near by.
Or if you don't have any space for one.... find a nice closet organizer so you can put folded clothing in the closet.
I have a small nursery too. I'm using my FIL's old dresser from his childhood (DH is sanding it right now to re-stain it to match it to the crib!). It's too tall for it to be used as a changing table too so I bought a small cabinet changing table that matches my crib. That's all the furniture I have space for in the nursery. I"m bummed because I can't fit a rocker/glider in there! Booo! Luckily we have really nice and comfy couches so I can nurse in there in the middle of the night.
We kept a full sized bed in DD1's nursery when she was little, so - space was limited. We went with a crib like this instead of having a seperate changer. Ours actually has drawers on the front and shelves on the side that we put baskets on. This could work for clothes in baskets - if you have yet to buy/order your crib.
This is what we did. It holds a ton of stuff. It's the changing table from the Graco Lauren Collection (we have the crib as well) and the drawers are closetmaid from Target. Our nursery is 10x10 so we didn't have much space to work with.
When I was asking about this, people suggested those hanging shelves for storage in the closet rather than a dresser. Babies don't need much hanging space
DH and I own a one bedroom condo- and thanks to the lovely realestate bust here in edmonton that is NOT recovering as fast as I want it to- LOL- Baby is going to be in with us. I'm tossing furniture, old clothes, etc. so that we'll have room for a small crib, we're tacking a changing pad to a dresser we already have, and are tossing an ottoman we got a wedding gift (that i hate, lol) to make room for the play yard.
Instead of asking 'what extra stuff do we want' we're sticking with 'what is absolutely needed to keep baby safe and happy, and Mommy and Daddy sane?
I LOVE the idea of hanging organizers, though. Closet space is one thing we actually have here!
Our nursery is small to begin with but also has sloped ceilings so we had to go with a dresser/changer combo that is slightly on the smaller side- it has 3 drawers and a small side door with 2 shelves. It is by Europa Baby (part of Babi Italia) and will fit nice in the small room. We also went with the matching crib because it's shorter and will fit better under the short ceilings - too bad I'm 5'9 and foresee a lot of head bumping when using the changer and putting the baby in and out of the crib!! I'm hoping to be able to fit those two pieces as well as our glider and ottomon but I have a feeling I'm pushing it!
