Moms with LOs with umbelical hernias

Re: Moms with LOs with umbelical hernias

  • The vast majority close up on their own by toddlerhood. There is a low risk of strangulation/incarceration with these hernias rather than those in other locations, so it's safe to just watch them. Just leave it completely alone.... some culture believe taping a coin over it can help but that is not true.

  • My friends son had one, and she was told if it didn't go away by age 2 or 3 (I'm not sure which, anymore) that they would do surgery.

It went away on its own, no problem!

  • thanks guys you just calmed me down! how would I know if there is something wrong  going on?!
  • Almost all heal on their own.  My DD had one and it was gone by maybe 2 or so. :)
  • Have you noticed that it kind of goes in and out? Like it will pooch out but you can gently push it back in? Often they'll stick out when the baby is straining or crying and when they are on their back, it will go back "in" and be flat again.

Well in the case of strangulation/incarceration it will stay out, be firm, and she will be very uncomfortable. It may also be discolored. That's an emergency -- but again, with this kind of hernia (rather than one in the groin, for example) the risk is very, very low. HTH!

  • Grant's was pretty bad. Pedi said they do nothing until 2 years old and at that time they would evaluate whether to leave it or have surgery.

However, by the time he was six months it had healed and button retracted.

  • DD has one and now it is the size of not even a finger tip. It used to squish! yuck but pedi said to watch and if it doesn't go away by 2 or 3 then surgery but it's unlikely

    thanks it did help!!!!

  • DS has/had one from birth. IT was rally noticeable when he would be upset. She felt it and had us feel it. She said it wasn't that bad and some have it much worse, She said it will heal on it's own once his abdominal muscles get strong, and that it was not bad enough to require surgery. He is 9months old it is already much improved. As long as it doesn't get worse I wouldn't worry as of now.

  • My oldest had one and it was gone by time she was like 6 months old.  My youngest still has her.  It was pretty bad but it has gone down a ton.  Dr. said they do surgery at 2 if it is still there.
  • My daughter has had one sine birth; she is now 7 months.  It has improved, but is still noticeable.  Her pediatrician said they would wait until she was 5 years old before considering surgery.
  • thanks for your responses everyone! :)
