those with toddlers...*dust* please

Today, I started the 3 day potty training with DS. He has been going potty since about 15 months but then he started getting lazy and has said its easier to go in his pull-up than in the big boy toilet. :-OWish me luck and send some dust that can help me hopefully find the strength to get through this...being sick and tired all the time is going to be something to have to get over because I AM going to get us through this! Thanks! Also, if anyone has any advice that can help PLEASE feel free to share!

Re: those with toddlers...*dust* please

  • We just got through all of this, so I totally feel your pain.  Is there something that he really likes?  DD loves money so we had a "potty bank" set up in her bathroom and each time she would go, she could put a penny in her bank.  This worked very well for her.

Another tip, DITCH the pull-up and go straight for underwear.  I know you are tired, but he won't like the feeling of being wet either and this phase should pass soon.  I used to work in a day care and we hated pull-ups because they were just an easy-to-remove diaper.  We now only use them for night time.

Because I have a really bad gag reflex right now, we also ditched the potty chair (the one you have to dump out) because all I have to do now is plug my nose, wipe her and flush.  I don't have to mess with dumping or cleaning the chair.

I hope this helps and best of luck!

Steal my kids picture or pretend they are yours, I will find where you live and ship all of their dirty diapers to your doorstep. Promise. image

  • oh yea, we have officially ditched the pull-ups. DS has been in big boy undies ALL DAY! and we are only on our 3rd pair! lots of people say they go through more....

we do not have the potty b/c i literally would vomit everytime he went...he has one of those cushiony seat things. its nice.

unfortunately, we have a candy thing going...BUT i have started giving him like one smartie (NOT one pack) and he loves it just the same. at least he's not getting too much i guess. i will try the $ thing and see if that works.

i am a little worried b/c MIL took him for the night and idk if she will follow the routine (i completely explained it to her and she said she understood) we shall just have to see.

he has gone about 6 times today in the big boy potty! and only gone through 2 pair underpants! i think its not too shabby for day 1!

  • We did the 3-day approach with our oldest and it worked wonderfully for him!  We took the hard-core route and had him only wearing big-boy undies day and night.  He wet the bed once and never did again!  We had also been working on potty training with him for a while but the 3-day is what made it really click for him.

The only tip I'd give is to stick to the plan strictly and don't waiver even once.  The guidelines that I read about the 3-day approach even suggested having your child throw away their remaining diapers at the beginning of Day 1 so that they know there's no going back.

I hope it works through him staying with your MIL... is he staying with her away from home, or is she coming to your house?  Our plan suggested not leaving the house for the 3 days in order to avoid accidents in the car or other places and also to avoid training pants.

Good Luck, hang in there!! : )

He threw the pull-ups away but I pulled them out before taking the trash out (DH would kill me for wasting them! lol)

He is spending the night with MIL. I just had a check in with her. They went to walmart and he was in his big boy pants and then went to the potty ON THE TOILET and then went again an hour later at her house! She knows my plans and has a copy of the 3 day method b/c I told her how it concerned me that he leave to go with her during this important time and I didn't want him to get off track.

I will get him back tomorrow. I had to say yes when she asked if I wanted her to take him...I didn't sleep at all last night and really didn't want to be up with him all night (she will!) and I have been feeling sick :-( BLAH!

So walmart was the only stop and they are home and the only other time he will be traveling is to come home tomorrow. I think this may actually work... *fingers crossed*

    Thanks for the advice!
