High-Risk Pregnancy

GD Newbie

My suspicions were just confirmed about 25 minutes ago and getting on the internet has helped me to stop my tears...i know, it is NOT the end of the world ;)   I have GD.  I already figured I had it because no matter what I try to eat I feel crappy about and hour or two later.  I then just repeat this cycle with the 2 to 3 hour snacks my unborn daughter requires.

Please help me figure out some good meals I could eat until I get my appointment with the Diabetes clinic.  I can't eat much, and haven't been able to since becoming pregnant.  In fact, I weigh less now than I did in July and I am 30 weeks.

Due to my suspicions, I had done some research and talked to some GD mom's at the OB.  I have been watching my carbs, though I am not sure how many is too many and how many is too few!  I try to eat a portion of protein (beans, plain greek yogurt, boiled egg) and I try to get my fats from milk and cheese.  I also use almond butter and eat raw and/or toasted almonds. I make sure I use high grain bread and that I don't eat more than one piece of it for my meal/snack.  I probably need to add meat to my meals, but the thought is repulsive to me.  However, I am willing to do it.  One thing that I have eaten that I really enjoyed was a slice of thin crust pizza with grilled chicken, jalapenos and mushrooms from pizza hut.  I actually felt decent for hours after eating it.

I worry about the exercise thing...I was walking 2 to 3 miles until put on moderate bedrest in November.  I now am allowed to be "normal" again, but have not been exercising due to fatigue.  (I am a high school teacher and they just wear me out mentally and physically). So I suspect I need to add some exercise...when is the right time to do this in regard to meals?

If ANYONE has ANY good ideas for me to try in regard to eating something good for me and my baby girl, I would be so appreciative.  I figure, If I am feeling crappy from food...she must be feeling crappy too!

I'd also like some exercise advice if you have any.

Sad, but ready for this challenge....10 weeks until baby Marley arrives

Re: GD Newbie

  • I just met with the dietitian 2 hrs ago :)  I'm charting my numbers for a while to see if I do have GD.

     1) Eat every 2 hrs  Eat 3 meals and three snacks, start with breakfast, then have a snack, then lunch, then afternoon snack....... and so on

    2)  Your first meal of the day should have the least amt of sugars- they didn't want any fruit for breakfast- your body is most insulin resistant at this time.

With each meal- eat 45 g of carbs  (breakfast example)- 2 starch, o fruit, 1 milk, 1 oz meat, 2 fat-  That would be like 2 slices of Toast, 1 cup of mil, 1 sausage patty, 1Tsp margarine.

For each snack 15 g carb, and 1 oz meat- Ex- 6 saltine crackers, 1 tbsp peanut butter.  (Repeat 3 times with varying foods for your snacks)

For lunch and dinner- Eat 3 carbs (45 g), 3 oz of meat, and 2 fat groups

I've got a few pamplets about it with me, so I can try to look up if you have any questions.

Doing exercise like walking will help keep your blood sugars regulated, my little pamphlet says it's best to do this right after a meal when  your blood glucose level is at the highest. You have to exercise 4-5 x a week for 20-30 minutes to see the effect of this "invisible insulin".  I'm playing with my wii fit a lot :D

  • Thanks....i really needed those examples of specific foods.  My pregnancy brain turns to mush the second I think in the realm of Starch, Carbs, Proteins.  While I DO know what they are, I have a hard time thinking of good examples (except for the obvious).  I am coming back from a modified bed rest situation.  I was SHOCKED at how draining a 20 minute walk was for me.  I've only done three so far.  Hopefully I can build up my stamina.

I'll have to see if I can find a wii fit game that I can do for 20-30 minutes. That might be more exhausting than the walk ;)

My biggest issue is that I just feel sick after I eat. Not like when I had morning sickness...just weak and puny.  I start to feel better as time passes and then I have to start the whole thing over again.  I am very anxious about thinking about what I have to eat.  I can't wait to meet with a professional who can better guide me.  I am ready to be doing this...like RIGHT NOW!!

Let me know if you figure out a good meal!  I am all ears on specific ideas.

Thank you so much for sharing :)
