coming unswaddled + pulling out pacifier = poor sleep for all

So LO is now strong enough to wriggle out of any swaddle we wrap her in, and the first thing she does when she gets her hands free is pull out her pacifier.  Then start crying.

She needs the pacifier to fall asleep, but in her half asleep state she is ALWAYS pulling it out!  I try to get her to do it when she's awake so she'll realize if she pulls on that thing in her mouth, yes, it comes out and then she's upset.  But no connection yet.

Any advice to get to stop pulling it out?  I'd like to stop swaddling too because she can't fall asleep unless she's swaddled w/ pacifier in at this point.

  • Don't have any answers for you to un-swaddle and keep the nuk... since my solution to the same problem was just to find a better swaddle :)  I actually tried him without it this morning for his nap and it was a total failure, so he's back in his double swaddle with the nuk safely in his mouth.

  • We were going through the EXACT same thing...plus he was waking himself up at 3am trying to get his arms out of the swaddle.  We started weening him by leaving one arm free-this took about 3 nights of multiple wake-ups before he became used to it and went back to sleepign through the night.  Then after about 3 or 4 weeks, we started him in sleep sacks...this past night was night 3 and he was only up once compared to the 2 or 3 times the previous 2 nights.  We also did away with the binkie at nighttime when we Ferberized him so that he would learn to fall asleep on his own.  However, for naps I still double swaddle and use the binkie...not sure how I am going to do away with them for naps. :(
  • we took alex out of the swaddle cold turkey. we put her in a sleep sack thing & gave her the paci.

the first night was HELL. i was up every 10-20 min because she'd wake herself up flailing about & knocking out her paci.

but the 2nd night was much better- only every couple hours i'd have to get up. but the 3rd night she was STTN once again.

i get up maybe 1-2 times per night to put her paci back in her mouth when she whines. but after she falls asleep she spits it out & she's fine.

the thing that helps is even though she's not swaddles, i still use the sleep positioner tabs to keep her in place. i also have a blanket tucked over her lower half (VERY tightly tucked under each end of the mattress so she can't kick it off onto her face)

i'm going to take the blanket off in a few more weeks- then remove the positioners & see how she does. bay steps :)

    good luck!

p.s. alex could always get out of her swaddle until i started swaddling her REALLY tight- i'd pin her arms down & make sure they were low so she couldn't get them out- when that started pissing her off i knew it was time to take her out!

  • I think I might have something that will help you.  YouTube the escape proof swaddle.  It works great! My LO doesn't wake out from pulling out the paci anymore, she just spits it out and cries now Stick out tongue

  • Not to do a shameless plug here but if you read my blog, I just went through the very same thing and we are now 100% deswaddled.
  • seriously, she's in the other room right now "talking"/fussing because she has knocked the pacifier out AGAIN, and I have already gone in multiple times to replace it, and re-swaddled, to no avail.  She's only half way through her nap (45min) and not ready to get up.

::sigh::  Just don't know what to do!
