GD mamas- tester question??

I think my blood sugar tester is being wacky.  After a normal reading this AM of 86... I only ate a small bowl of low-sugar oatmeal (22g carbs) and water for breakfast.... which I've always had low numbers afterwards with.

An hour later I got a 139!!  I used the control strip and then tested again- got a 154!!  Waited 5 minutes, sanitized my hands (again....) and got a 107.  The 107 is in line with what I would expect from that breakfast.  I've always gotten between 88-110 with that breakfast.

Any suggestions/advice??

  • Traces of hand lotion or sanitizer can throw off your readings.   The diabetes clinic was adament that I wash with soap and water and rinse and dry well before testing -- to not use hand sanitizer.  I don't know if that if part of the issue you are seeing but it might be worth trying.

If the numbers are wonky again, call your diabetes centre.  Mine verified my meter a couple times as part of their regular routine.  They simply had me test on my meter and then immediately test on their meter.

This.  I have had fine results with both soap-and-water washing, or using an actual alcohol swab (I work in a hospital), but wonky results if I used hand sanitizer.  I suspect this is because sanitizers generally have moisturizing ingredients in them, plus whatever makes the alcohol turn into a gel.

  • I'm am really new to all of this bu just curious, why did you test an hour after eating?

I had my diabetes counseling class this morning and had to try out my glucose monitor.  I tested 1 hr 20 minutes after eating and my level was 154 but when I tested at the 2 hr mark it was 112 - which is in range for me.  I am supposed to test 2 hours after each meal.  Maybe not everyone does that though.

I had cereal w/ skim milk for breakfast.

  • Yea, if I use a hand sanatizer, my numbers go crazy. I have to wash my hands with soap and water, or if I am out I keep just hand wet wipes in my purse that do not have anything on them.

  • I saw my nutrionist today for a f/u & I had some questions like that for her & she said that it depends on how fast the carbs are being absorbed. She told me to add some kind of protein with my oatmeal & it'll help keep my numbers down.

Different diabetes clinics require different things. I also have to test 1 hr after I start a meal. The glucose ranges are just adjusted to meet either 1 hr or 2 hr goals.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.  Makes sense now!
