anybody have to go under general anesthesia for a c-section?

i know this would only be done in the most emergent of situations, but a family friend had to have general anesthesia with an emergency c-section early this morning.  we haven't heard anything more.  i personally had an emergency CS, with DS' heartrate dropping into the 40's and not coming back up.  just curious if anyone had this happen and what the circumstances were.

  • My epidural stopped working while they were sewing me up so they knocked me out.

hmmm...i never thought about this scenario.  i guess that would be better, since you are actually present and aware for the birth and get to see the baby.

  • i labored for 16 hours, pushed for 1.5 hours...his heartrate started to drop and they needed to get him out quick.  the dr did an episiotomy and tried foreceps with no success.  his heartrate kept dropping and mine was rising.  the dr called for an emergency c-sec and the last thing i remember was someone telling me i would feel pressure in my throat (for the breathing tube) and that was the last thing i remember (i was in a lot of pain).  i woke up 2 hours later...

  • I labored for 18 hours, never got to push.  Baby's heart rate wasn't doing well and I was in soo much pain!  I had an epi that wore off, so they tried a spinal when I was on the table for the C-sec.  It didn't work, so they put me under!  It was crazy, but all worked out in the end.
  • My mom did (granted it was a long time ago) when she started hemorrhaging. She had placenta previa which almost killed her and my brother. There would have been no time for anything else so they had to knock her out.

  • You'd need it if a spinal were contraindicated for some reason, but you'd know about it going in. If the spinal or epi didn't work, like what happened to the pp. If you wanted to go natural and something emergent happened, and they didn't have time for a spinal. That's about it, I think.
  • My mom did with my little sister.  The placenta detached from the uterus so they put her out to do the section.

This happened to me, but they didn't knock me out!  They tried to give me a topical anesthetic and pumped the morphine, but I could still feel the stitching.  :(

I was going to list the second and third reasons you mentioned.

  • I had a general for a retained placenta after having DD and it took me 4hrs before I was even holding my daughter again. And that's not with the added surgery of a C.

  • My sister had an placenta abruption and they knocked her out immediately and did a classical c-section when she arrived at the hospital.  They also did not give her any pain meds until after they woke her up, which was a nice touchSurprise

  • I labored for 20+ hours, the epi didn't work (3 attempts) b/c of my scoliosis. When the Dr. finall called for a c/s, after 2 hours of pushing, they told me they would have to put me under general b/c of the 3 failed epi's.

I had even gone for a pre-consultation w/ the anesth. and they said me getting and epi would be no problem, that they had seen worse scoliosis and the epi's worked.

  • yes, i had gen anesthesia. i was on blood thinners and the docs didn't feel it was safe to do local.?
