So...I've kind of been in the dark about what I can expect the rest of my pregnancy to look like. I have GD and mild Pre-E, and both conditions have been under control so far, thank God.
While wandering around my hospital's website, I found some files that outline general high-risk protocols. I'm going to check with my OB, but it sounds like their procedure is to induce labor in preeclamptic patients at 37 weeks, regardless of how mild the case is.
My question is, is this what you've commonly seen and/or heard from your OB about preeclampsia? I'm going to check with my OB, of course, but I guess it didn't occur to me that in a very mild case they're still anxious to get that baby out of there! It makes sense, I suppose, considering the risks posed to the mama and baby, but is this generally the standard for every hospital?
Re: Pre-E question. Curious about induction.
I had pre-e with my last pregnancy. I was told to expect to be induced at 34 weeks. However I responded to bedrest very well, and my OB said we would try for 36 weeks. Well, 36 weeks came and my blood work was still fine, so he let me keep going. He was also doing an internal every week to check to make sure my cervix was favorable to induction. At 37 weeks I was a fingertip dilated, but my water broke and I went into labor at 37.3 weeks.
My had already warned me that I wouldn't go past 38 weeks because it is just too dangerous. The bigger the baby gets, the more strain it is on the already fragile mother. Also the placenta isn't working as well in a pre-e situation so in most cases it is better for the baby to be born at that point. I was seen 2-3 times a week by my OB and had weekly u/s and NST to monitor the baby.
I think it mostly depends on your OB and how you are doing.
I think the reason they typically deliver at 37 weeks even for a mild case is because Pre-e can restrict baby growth. So there way of thinking is the baby going to benefit from a few more weeks or better thrive if born at 37. That's my understanding good luck
When I first had BP problems around the start of the 3rd trimester, the plan was to deliver me at 36 weeks, no matter what.
Unfortunately I developed bigger problems than that and ended up delivering at 32.
Does your hospital have at least a level 3 NICU in case you have to go earlier?
