The nurse just called to tell me that my 1 hour glucose test result was 200 and they don't even want me to take the 3 hour test. She's going to call the hospital to get me an appointment with the nutritionist for either this Monday or the following Monday, depending on openings. Since it could be over a week before I get in I'd like to know what I can do right now to change my diet. Can someone point me in the right direction? I eat so poorly that I really have no idea what I should be eating. I had severe hyperemesis for the first 4 months of this pregnancy (I.V. hooked up 24/7 for 5 weeks, zofran, hospital stays, ect) and now this I'm just really upset.
any other important info would be great too.
thank you.
Re: GD- Where do I start? pls help
Limit your carb intake. Drastically.
20-30g carbs for breakfast
under 25g morning snack
20-30g carbs for lunch
under 25g afternoon snack
20-30g carbs for dinner
under 25g bedtime snack
**only water and unsweetened tea/coffee... no fruit juices or sodas, etc...
My guidelines were a little less strict, and based on a 2000-calorie diet:
30 g carb breakfast; have 2-3 oz protein (an egg, for example) with that.
15g carb mid-morning snack
45 g carb lunch; can have 4 oz protein with that
15-30 g carb snack
60 g carb dinner; 4 oz protein.
15-30 g carb snack
No fruit or milk before about 10 am, and no juice or regular soda.
Those guidelines would probably already be dropping most people's daily carb loads. I found most of my favorites could be worked in as long as I watched portion size. I added a salad with at least one meal per day, too. At least it gives you a starting point until you can get a nutritionist appointment. Make sure you eat the proteins, because they help you feel full longer. Keep drinking your water! And try to get exercise every day. Even a 15-20 min walk after a meal will help keep your blood sugar in check.
This board is really great. There are a lot of ladies that will be able to give you some great advice and tips.
I just found out a week ago that I have GD. It's overwhelming for sure. I have my class tomorrow so I'm hoping to know better what to do but the ladies here have been a big help so far!
I was in the same boat when I was diagnosed with it at 32 weeks... don't worry though it is not as bad as it sounds.
The other posts are right about the carb intake, my limits are about the same. I stay away from cereal/ oatmeal in the morning as well as fruit... the morning seems to be hardest to control. But just watch the carbs and eat 6 times a day.
Not sure why - but I find it I eat something a little sweet ,if I pair it with a couple of peanuts/ nuts it seems to help lower the number.
Good luck - there is lots of support on this board and even though I don't post alot - I come read and always find good advice and answers to my questions.
thank you all. I started the carb counting with dinner tonight. I've been reading different sites all day trying to figure out what I can eat. I sent all the sugar/candy items with DH to work this afternoon so I don't have them here.
The nurse at my OB's office was able to get me into the Monday morning class so I that will help too. It's a 3 1/2 class at the diabetes center next to the hospital.
Do you count fat grams too? Like what if something is under the carb #, but seems high in fat? How much fat is too much?
DH went to the store to get some things and I asked him to look at flour tortillas and the whole wheat ones have more carbs and more sugar than the regular ones--- we were surprised by that.
dont worry- let me break down one of my typical food days!
Breakfast 30-45 carbs, 1 oz prot- Vans waffle with marg/soysage
(or a whole wheat english muffin with cheese always works!)
Snack- cheese and crackers 15-20 carbs, 1 oz prot
Lunch- Veggie burger on a bun with or without cheese, 19 tater tots! 45 carbs, 2-3oz prot
snack- greek yogurt with berries (or flavored if my sugar is low after lunch) again same as above.
Dinner- 4 chik nuggets, roasted mushroom, tomato and cucumber salad, piece of garlic bread- again same as lunch
Snack- coconut ice cream sandwich 15-20 carbs
thats everything i ate yesterday. My blood sugar was no higher than 98. it all about portion control and prep. hang in there!
