Appt this AM- talk re GD

So I met with the OB/GYN for the first time since finding out i have GD (already been to dietician and for first growth u/s).  Granted, this wasn't **MY** doctor- it was another in the same practice, so naturally, I'll be asking MY doctor the same questions when I see her in 2 weeks...

Basically, I asked what the protocol is if I can keep my numbers in check with diet alone, and if LO stays measuring "normal" (as opposed to large), and my fluid levels remain good, etc....

She said that if everything remains healthy and good, that they will likely induce me ~39 weeks (technically I would be 39w3d when MY dr has her hospital day to induce)... unless he comes on his own before then.

Is this normal??  I was under the impression that if everything was NORMAL- then they'd induce me AFTER my EDD... (which is a Saturday- so the Tuesday following my EDD)??

Thoughts?

Obviously, I'll be asking my dr in 2 weeks what SHE thinks... TIA!

PS- h/b was 143bpm and LO seems just fine!!!  We have our next growth u/s in 3 weeks

Re: Appt this AM- talk re GD

  • This is one of those things that seems to vary by doctor.

I was diet controlled, measuring just fine (in fact I measured behind).  Great blood pressure, yadda, yadda.   I was induced at 40 weeks.

  • If I was only diet controlled I would be induced at 40 weeks, but no later.  Now that I am on NPH at night for my fasting numbers I will be induced at 39 weeks.  Just FYI, a lot of people are unaware that size is not the only issue with GD babies so they might give you a hard time about why you are being induced.  There is the risk of premature placental aging, increased risk of stillbirth, etc.
  • Definitely seems to vary - but for me, I can't go past my EDD because they are worried about placenta break down, especially since I'm not totally diet controled. I take insulin for my morning #s.

But, as long as he is b/t 50% and 90% for weight (He is at 66% now, down from 80% at the first growth u/s) they will induce sometime in the 39th week.

If he goes above 90%, I will need a c/s.

But that's just my Doctor's office!

  • So we've had several discussions at my midwives' office, since I try to see a different one each time (so no surprises at my delivery).  I'm diet-controlled, the baby measures perfect on u/s (large end of normal, but DH and I are both very tall), and he moves all the time.  I'll continue to have in-office ultrasounds to evaluate the placenta and fluid levels for the next few weeks -- as long as the placenta looks good and LO is acting as he should, they will not induce me before 40 weeks.  We have briefly touched on inducing between 40 and 41 weeks, but are playing it by ear based on how the baby is doing.
