High-Risk Pregnancy

I have the GD blues

I've read through many posts and this sounds pretty common, but what's the easiest way to deal with this???

I was just diagnosed last week and I have my diabetic counseling class this Friday.  It's really hard not knowing what I should or shouldn't eat yet.

DH and I went to the grocery store yesterday and I was really unprepared.  The experience sucked!  I spent way to much time on the bread aisle and then wasn't pleased with my selection.  The only thing I really remembered anyone talking about was the Special K protein plus so I picked up some of that.

Please tell me that once I find out more details it will be easier!

Re: I have the GD blues

  • Ugh, I was a nightmare at that first grocery trip!  My poor DH was trying to be helpful and find good foods, and I just kept snapping at him and almost crying because I felt like I'd have to eat like a rabbit for 10 weeks.

It gets MUCH easier, especially after the class, and even more so once you find a routine and some favorite meals.  Don't despair!

  • Loading the player...
  • it definitely gets easier, and I actually enjoy shopping - DH calls it the carb counting game. Stick to the outer perimeter and load up on easy to fix, realistic options.  There's tons of diabetic shopping lists and guides online.

bon bell cheese- has been a snack life saver for all the protien.

You'll be fine, it sucks but youll get through it!

  • I know it's really hard in the week between finding out and the class. I actually cut out a lot of carbs in that week thinking I wouldn't be allowed to have any, and was surprised to see that we CAN have carbs just need to count them!

My nutritionist has me on this schedule

Breakfast - 30 carbs - i LOVE special K protein plus so i have that with milk. the only hard thing is eliminating orange juice which i LOVE but that is 26 g for one cup so that would be my whole breakfast! instead i have water with lemon.

am snack is 15 g - i usually have an apple (15g)  and a cheese stick which is 0

    lunch - 45 g

pm snack - 15 g usually cheese and crackers (watching the serving size - the crackers are the only carb) and celery with a little bit of peanut butter

dinner - 60 g which is actually a lot i think so i was happy with that!

night snack - 30 g and she said we can have ice cream so i eat an ice cream sandwich!

i actually lost a pound after the first week of this diet, and I'm at 31 weeks. my OB said that's normal to see in pregnancies when people start the diet. i figure i don't want to have a huge baby and i'm finding that i'm really getting used to it. good luck and try not to stress too much about it!

  • I am so glad that I'm not the only one who hated the first grovery store experience. I was tearing up the entire time. My poor DH was trying so hard to keep my optimistic, but it seemed like everything I normally eat I cannot eat anymore. It's really sucky....but I hear it gets better. GL!
