Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

19 Month Old Genius

I was talking to a close friend and I told her that DD is starting to say her ABCs (DD just turned 18 months).  Her baby is exactly 1 month older than DD, and she said her baby counts to 20, can spell her name, can sing her ABCs, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Jesus Loves Me, can say animal sounds, and she recognizes the letter O.  I was floored.  Is my baby way behind, or do she have a genius over there?!?!?

Re: 19 Month Old Genius

  • meh, i don't think either are true - your kid being behind or hers being a genius.  kids develop differently. i was in gifted programs and skipped 2 grades in school, graduated college when i was 20 and finished two masters before i was 25 but i didn't speak a work until i was 2.  i guess i just didn't have anything to say ::shrug::

fwiw:  dd is 16 months and can say "a, b, c, d, e, e, e..." and count to 3.  knows some animals sounds, but applies "moo" to most.  she can identify pretty much all primary colors, but she's a chatter box.  i don't think she's advance, just developing differently, you know?

  • DS says his ABCs, can count to 10 and knows number 17, knows Twinkle Twinkle and a bunch of other songs, says animal sounds, knows the letters A, B, I, O, M, and of course I think he's a genius.

Of course he can't spell his name so he's probably not. But I still like to think he is.

  • I think your friend is full of something.  I'd type it but I'd get censored.

  • I don't think so... DS could do all that (and more--ha!) and he's not a genius, that's just how he developed (he also didn't walk till he was 20 months).

Why do people say this when they hear a younger toddler can do things like this?

I have MET eighteen and twenty month olds that can sing their ABCs, identify animals and their sounds, who are potty training, etc.

Our kids work on different milestones at different times. The eighteen month old that I knew who could sing her ABCs also didn't start walking until nearly sixteen months old. Her sister didn't start talking until she was two but could color in the lines at twenty months old.

Every kid is different. Would you say that I am full of shiiit because my kid can sing parts of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star? Or can do a few animal sounds and identify a few animals? Or has a large vocabulary? Or because she started walking before ten months?

i know, i love that everyone e-rolls their eyes at me b/c dd is potty trained for the most part.  lol.  don't be jealous ;)

but on a serious note, yeah....i don't think that most things kids do or don't do at this age is hardly a reflection of what they'll be capable of in school. my retired school teacher aunt says the hardest part of kindergarten is that every parent thinks they have to smartest kid in the room and then they get pissed when you tell them they are wrong!

I have to agree with this. DS walked at 8.5 months, has been singing his full ABCs from at least 17 months, he's known how to sing Twinkle Twinkle, Wheels On the Bus, Your Are My Sunshine, Row Row Row Your Boat, and quite a few other songs for a good long time. He's been able to count to 10 from at least 17 months. Animal sounds he's know for a very very long time. He knows colors, shapes, and has a massive vocabulary.

None of this is made up and it is entirely possible.

He's a regular kid who plays and learns a lot of things from the other kids in daycare, from reading, from TV even. Kids learn things at different rates. He may not learn to add 1+1 until he's 10 years old, who knows.

    WORD.

  • Yeah I have 1 kid who was doing all of that at 18m and a 2nd who is on the later end of the spectrum. It is not BS, we have it all on video, dated. Some kids do things earlier than others. C had very early language skills but J walked earlier. I doubt J will have 10 words by 18m at this point.
  • Mason can do some animal sounds.  He understands when someone is counting but can only say some numbers and in no particular order.  He definitely isn't singing any songs, he'll laugh, clap and do the motions (wheels on the bus or itsy bitsy spider) but form a sentence, nah. We're just happy that now he's saying about 3 new words (more or less we're not counting) a week.  I don't think our kids are behind they just are doing things on their own time.  I am quite sure they'll catch up between kindergarten and college!
  • Wow just this morning I was so excited to tell DH that ds said ABCD... Your friend just killed it for me!!!! Embarrassed
