Two Under 2

second crib?

I can't decide whether to buy a second crib.  DS will be 16 months when this new one comes.  I am thinking about investing in a pac n' play for a few months before we transition DS into a bed and the new one into a crib.  At this point, they will also be sharing a room, so I do not know if I want 2 cribs in the room.

What are you doing/did about a second crib?

Re: second crib?

  • we bought a second convertible crib. DD has a convertible and I want her to stay in it for as long as possible. And when she's ready to move to a toddler bed, we'd have to have something for the new baby to sleep anyways, because her crib converts. They had a graco convertible on clearance at target for 104 so we bought that.

we have a pnp but my stupid cat pissed_ in it...so I'm really into using for my kid to sleep in. and I didn't want to buy a new one when they are about the same price as this crib we bought.

  • We bought another crib. DS#1 was only 13 months when DS#2 arrived, and there was no way I was even entertaining the idea of switching him to a toddler bed anytime soon. He is still in his crib now at 22 months.

  • We are buying another crib (DS will be 17 months when DD arrives).  DS has a convertible crib and it's boyish, so I want him to keep that set.  We're buying a more girly white convertible crib and dresser set for DD.  I'm just not in any big rush to move DS to a bed, he does great in the crib and has never shown any interest in climbing out.

  • We went ahead and bought a second crib (convertible) but they aren't room sharing either. We also have a pack n play we used with my son for the first 2 1/2 months before puttting him in his crib at night (he took naps there after a while before then) and we'll do the same with this one. I'm not sure how their room will be set up but I know I couldn't fit two convertible cribs and their dressors in the same room.

  • Yes, second crib for us, too.  This one won't be in DS's room, though, but in our bedroom, until they get old enough to share (i.e. DS is in his twin bed).

Not sure whether to do convertible or not, we'll probably go with what's on sale and in our budget.

  • 17 months apart here.

Having a second crib was one of the smartest things we did.

It so much easier to care for the baby when you know exactly where the toddler is and that he's safe.

No crib = potential for a wandering toddler while you're tied to caring for a newborn.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • My daughter will be 20 months when the new one arrives. I'm going to wait a few months, keeping the baby in the Pack N Play. When the oldest is 2, I'll evaluate whether she's ready to be in a toddler bed. If not, I'll keep her in her current crib (which converts) and buy a second convertible crib for the baby.
  • mine are 16 months and we have 2 cribs.  I got mine of craigslist and cleaned it really well.
  • We transitioned DS to a toddler bed at 17 months so I don't think 16 would be impossible. Depends on your child I suppose.

That said, a PNP can be handy. Especially if you want the new baby to sleep in your room for a while. We had one with a bassinet insert and a changing table thing and we used it in our room and it was great - that way we could change the baby right in our room without any hassle in the middle of the night and didn't need both a bassinet/cradle/whatever and a changing table in there.

  • We are doing the two crib thing in one room.  Here are my reasons:

DD is going to b 20-21 months and is not ready for being potty trained

DD needs to be accounted for at night - even though #2 will be in a pack and play in our room

We purchased a convertable crib for #2 but put #1 in it... we will convert this crib for #1 when she is ready for a toddler bed - after 2 years old because she needs to be "caged in right now"

We are hoping to convert #1's crib prior to putting #2 in the same room so she is use to some freedom but understands the rules of the bed - staying in it at night:)

  • we have a full bedroom set in our guest room, which is where we'll move DD.  I don't think she'll be ready for a full sized bed (she'll be 22 months when the new baby arrives), so I'm going to buy a cheap IKEA crib for her to use until she's ready to move to a regular bed.
  • DD was 11 months old when DS was born, so we didn't even consider moving her at that point.  We thought about keeping DS in the co-sleeper till ~5 months like we did DD, but he didn't sleep as well in there as she did, so we just went ahead and bought a crib on Craigslist and will probably sell it the same way when he outgrows it.

I like having the crib to keep DD contained.

  • I thought I'd be able to rransition DD to a toddler bed before #2 arrives (she'll be 22 mos) but it's just not happening.  We bought another crib.  DS will be in our room for the 1st 3 mos in a bassinet tho.
