Have I waited long enough so that it's not 'weird' (or whatever the term was??).
Here's the short story (sort of)...
I'd been having
contractions since Friday evening. Finally Monday morning at 2am they
were 5 minutes apart, so we headed to the hospital to meet the midwife.
I was only 2cm dilated, and had not changed since Thursday (when I had
a stretch and sweep), so they sent us home (it took me forever to
dilate with Ruari, so no one thought anything would happen). I took some Gravol and Tylenol, hooked up the tens
machine and tried to sleep. At about 4ish, I woke up with horrendous
contractions. They were about 2 minutes long, every 3 minutes and were
excruciating. I also started to feel super nauseous despite having
taken Gravol (which I thought was odd). Finally I told DH that
something didn't seem right and that we needed to call the midwife
back. I started a bath and got in while DH talked to the midwife.
She listened to one of my contractions, and told us to get to the
hospital right away, and to call the other midwife if there was an
emergency. As I was getting out of the tub, my water broke, and I
started to bleed. As I was trying to get dressed, I had an unbelievable
urge to push. I had had an epidural with Ru, so the whole sensation was
very new to me. DH quickly called the midwife, and she told him to
call 911 and she was on her way. He called 911, got me on the floor,
got a towel and a pillow....and in 4 pushes out came
Maggie...screaming!!! He tied the cord off with a shoelace (why he
picked a shoelace, I don;t know...I have a whole craft room full of
wool etc.). And then the paramedics arrived (they sent 2 ambulances).
My midwife showed up about 10 minutes later, and took control, sewed me
up, got me in bed. She was born at 5:50 (ish) and by 7:30 I was sitting
in bed eating breakfast. It was all so very odd really. (I was also high on adrenaline, which was why I felt well enough to post, and because I had a midwife, I didn't need to go to the hospital)
We're still
pretty amazed that it all happened, and I am totally in awe of DH.
He was so calm....I was not (I remember saying 'This is not how it's
supposed to happen' as I was laying on the floor).
We're just
getting ourselves settled in. I feel quite well (in reality, it was a
pretty easy delivery). Ruari has somewhat gotten used to the idea of
'Iggie' as she calls her. My new little redhead is eating well and
often, and sleeping well. The midwife came today to check in, and we
are both doing very well. I am still amazed at this little baby...she
survived mommy having H1N1, then pneumonia, then breathing issues
(which meant heavy drugs) for months, and was then delivered by her
daddy...she's one tough cookie!!
Thanks for all your well wishes and thoughts!
