Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

What did you wean onto milk or something else?

My son is 13 months and I am about to start weaning him, he is solely on breast milk now (and of course food) but I am just not sure if giving him milk every day is a good thing?  My siblings are both lactose intolerant and something about it just doesn't seem right but he also hasn't been gaining a lot of weight lately either and I want to make sure he's getting the best thing...what did you all do, milk or if not what did you use?

Thanks!

  • Milk is crucial to a baby's / child's growth and development.  So yes, giving it every day is very important.  Have you spoken with your pedi about this?  If your son is lactose intolerant, there are options out there for him.... mainly Lactaid.

I mean, what else were you thinking of giving him in place of milk??

  • My father, sister and 2 brothers are lactose intolerant - I'm not and neither is ds. Talk with your doctor if you're concerned about it - but I would try regular milk first before any alternative.

    GL!

  • I've just read a lot about how our bodies don't digest milk well and that it blocks iron absortion and then I know a lot of kids have allergies to it so was just curious if everyone here uses milk or chose other options like soy milk/ almond milk etc...
  • Cow's milk is not crucial unless you're a baby cow IMO.

You're doing GREAT with breastfeeding, my first thought is to keep it up. The WHO recommends breastfeeding until 2.

If you want to introduce a different type of milk, we started with hemp milk mixed with a bit of flax seed oil for the extra fat. Once DS was ok with that, we tried almond milk with flax at 15ish months. I wouldn't do soy milk because my son drinks a LOT of 'milk' and I don't want him to have that much soy. I would also stay away from rice milk because it lacks nutrition.

     I hope this helps! :)

  • Our pedi has a very different take on milk after 12 months.  She feels like milk is for babies, and only babies.  She wants us to wean her from her bottle to water, but make up the "milk" in other ways with cheese and yogurt.

She is from Germany and is very old school in her practices, but I can see where she is coming from.  However, I think a good mix of all things is necessary and we will be weaning to whole milk.
