2nd Trimester

orange juice before big ultrasound???

We are having our Big U/S tomorrow and we are hoping to find out the gender.  My doctor advised me to drink a glass of water on the way there.  I have read that drinking OJ will make the baby more active.  Some people say it makes it easier to tell the gender, and others think it makes the baby to squirmy and difficult to see.  Any opinions on this?  Thanks!!

Re: orange juice before big ultrasound???

  • I would bring the OJ with instead of drinking it before.  You don't want LO moving too much because then it can be difficult to get the measurements they need.  We brought along a Fanta to ours and it came in handy when he was burying his face and she couldn't get a good view of his skull.

  • I had a small OJ beforehand.  He wasn't mega active, just active enough.

  • My old tech said that she didn't advise drinking it before hand.  If the baby is moving too much they can't get measurements...which is really the point (although finding out the sex is the fun part!).  If you are going to do anything, I would just have a sip or two.
  • I did not drink any OJ before mine, and our LO was still sooo active it took them 2 hrs to get the measurements they needed. They just happened to do the ultrasound on a day/time when he was going crazy. I wouldn't do it. They are really expirienced at getting the baby to move if they need to (I layed on my side, she would tap on my belly, etc). I would just say skip it so they can get what they need and im sure it won't be a problem to determine the sex.

  • I had a glass of OJ, a bottle water, and DONUTS!  haha but he was asleep the entire time we did the ultrasound and in the perfect posistion to see everything
  • I was told to drink 16oz of water 30 min before my appt.....it was better if my bladder was full (but had nothing to do with baby movement). I was hungry when I left the house so I actually brought a chocolate Ensure shake with me and had about half of that. Helped the hunger and provided enough chocolate so the baby was somewhat active!

  • I drank OJ and water and he was moving like crazy- they were easily able to determine the gender.  I read somewhere, though, that OJ doesn't have as much to do with it as the temperature and that if you drink a cold beverage, the baby might move more.  I know at night when I drink cold water, he moves a lot!

    Good Luck!!

  • my suggestion is to not drink the OJ. If you are worried about the baby being asleep then don't eat for a few hours before hand. If baby doesn't have a full belly the chances of it being awake  and active are greater.
  • I didn't drink anything and ours was plenty active. Actually I had a Fanta about 6 hours before so I doubt that was it. He was just very squirmy. I would take the oj with you and only drink if necessary.
  • All I had by the time I had my ultrasound was water and milk and she wouldn't sit still. I can't imagine what she would have been like if I had given her soda or something.
