Trying to Get Pregnant

OOP Clomid + monitoring costs?

DH and I have just started looking into RE appointments, procedures, etc. vs. contemplating acupuncture and alternative treatment vs. waiting it out further. We are currently in month 11, but only cycle 5 of TTC (with charting).

An initial consultation appointment with an RE seems to range from $250 to $350 around here(!) and no infertility appointments, tests, or procedures are covered by our insurance.

I'm speculating that Clomid will be the next step, since I have looong cycles (currently on CD 88 without ovulation), and I was wondering how much a Clomid cycle costs including ultrasound monitoring so that we have an idea of what to expect?

Many thanks in advance.

  • Before any treatment, you will have several blood tests, possibly a endometrial biopsy, and an HSG. You're husband will also have a SA.

    U/S & B/W runs around $300-$400. Clomid itself isn't too pricey.

  • I asked my RE how much treatments with monitoring, bloodwork, etc. would run OOP and she told me to expect something around $2,000-$3,000 a cycle.

Edit: Here's somthing from my RE's website:

    Infertility Treatment

The cost of a monitoring cycle for ovulation induction with insemination varies based on the individual patient?s treatment plan. The average cost ranges from $1800 - $2400. Pre-screening and medications are not included in this price. If your insurance carrier covers infertility diagnosis and testing, many of these services may be covered.

  • Wow, that's crazy!!  Would've never imagined that it could cost so much.  Thanks for your inputs, ladies.  While I was waiting for responses, I also did some googling and found this to use as reference:

    Wow.. I had no idea..

  • Check out my RE's website:

They have a lot of good info as well as some pricing.

  • Clomid is like $5 or so at Wal-Mart.  I don't know about the rest of it, though.  I know acupuncture/alternative medicine tends to be much more affordable.
  • I think it really depends on your area.  My RE charges $175 for the initial visit. Other than that I don't know any other costs but you should sit down with someone at your office and talk about costs before you make your plan.

  • Thanks for your thoughts.  Still trying to get over the sticker shock..
  • My entire IUI cycle including Clomid, b/w, u/s, wash and insemination was $700.  Now I did only have 1 u/s - each additional would have been another $240.

  • I am in the middle of my first Clomid cycle now. I can tell you of my expenses so far, but they are not complete. I have chosen to do as much of my treatments with my OB as I can due to being OOP.

1st: You will probably need provera to bring on a period: $4 at walmart/CVS

    2nd: Clomid itself: about $10

3rd: the initial visit with the OB/RE: around $70 for me (realize this is different everywhere you go)

4th: follicle checks via ultrasound: these are $180 each for me, I had 4 this cycle, luckily my OB has waived the cost of all but 1

    5th: CD21ish bloodwork to confirm O: around $50-100

That is just a broad guess at the expense of my cycle. I did not include any initial testing that your OB may want to do such as an SA or HSG. Hope this helps!

  • That's helpful info.  I did not like the OB/GYN that I met with AT ALL last week.  She was not very knowledgeable and I was skeptical of her advice.  However, maybe there are some other doctors in the same clinic (or others) that I would feel more comfortable with doing testing or treatment with.

Your relationship with your OB would for sure make a huge difference. I wouldn't have stayed with mine if I were not confident he had the knowledge to care for me safely. He is so wonderful though and amazes me everytime I go. I am fortunate that I have an OB who monitors the way mine does, most OBs don't, and that is their biggest downfall.
