High-Risk Pregnancy

Anyone with a bicornate uterus and bleeding?

I've been bleeding on and off for the past 6 weeks (I'm 12w1d), and after a 5th ultrasound today, I was finally told it seems I have a pool of blood on the left side of my ut (baby is on the right side and seems to be doing fine). My uterus is basically shedding its lining on this side, which obviously is not normal during pg. The on-call doctor said it could imply a hormonal imblanace or something else, and is sending me for more testing this week. They keep telling me they are unable to tell how severe the spetum is, but the bleeding is definetly in the left horn. Just wondering if anyone has heard of this or experienced something similar or know any resources? Internet searches have not turned up too much for me. TIA

Re: Anyone with a bicornate uterus and bleeding?

  • Hi Tia,

I also have a Bicornuate Uterus. I was wondering if I was the only one! They don't think I have a septum but a thicker lining on the top of my uterus which maybe a Bicornuate Ut. I did spot with my first pregnancy for about 2 days but ended up having a missed miscarriage and a D&C in March of 2008. I see we have alot in common. Are you just seeing a regular OB? They sent me to a Maternal Fetal OB/GYN since im High Risk because of the Bic Ut. I wish you the best!!!  Please keep me updated! If you don't mind I will keep you in my prayers!

  • Thanks for the reply Melanie, and I'll keep you in my T&Ps, too. Have you had any bleeding this time around? Right now, I'm seeing my regular OB, but depending on what I learn tomorrow when I go for more testing, I'm going to see if I should switch to a high-risk/specialist. Also, I've been doing a bunch of research online, and have found two other good sources I thought I'd share:

    1) the Mullerian Anomalies group on yahoo! (you have to request to join, and then you can read through other's posts and post your own questions): https://groups.yahoo.com/group/MullerianAnomalies

    2) A group devoted to women with BU's on BabyCenter: https://community.babycenter.com/groups/a599925/moms_with_a_bicornuate_uterus

Good luck and I'll continue to share with you anything I learn!

  • I just wanted to say thank you for posting those groups.  I am not pregnant yet but we are just starting to try.  It is so scary going into a pregnancy knowing of all the potential complications.

I with the best of luck to both of you and hope your pregnancies go well.   You are both in my thoughts and prayers.

I will also make sure to share anything I find on this condition.  It is really difficult to find much information on it.

  • I have a bicornuate uterus and had spotting throughout the first tri.  I had what I thought was quite a bit at 11 weeks that sent me to the ER.  So far I am 21 weeks and am doing well.

  • I have a BU as well, and I spotted and bled throughout 1st tri.  I have had about 2 weeks free of spotting now, so I'm hoping it's done!  I think it is actually more common than they want to let on that there is fluid build-up in the non occupied side.  I read several places online when I was researching when people said they basically had a period during their entire pregnancy because the side without the baby was functioning normally and producing and shedding a lining.  I'm not sure how true this is as my MFM said it's normal for there to be old blood left inside and get pushed out as the placenta gets bigger, BUT all of my bleeding was not old blood.  Just like you said, they always checked and the baby was always doing just fine.  Hopefully  yours will stop after 1st tri, but it sounds like they are keeping a good eye on you!  I start a cervical length u/s series next week since my Dr. said cervical incompetence is a risk with the BU.  I go weeks 16-26 since that is the danger period.

Lots of T&P to you!  Hopefully we will all have healthy babies by the end of the year!!
