Day one of PTing...

Lord help me! LOL

We had a horrendous fit over wearing the underwear, not wanting to watch Elmo Potty Time, etc. Now he's whining that he wants pants on (I just have a shirt and undies on him now). Ugh. Anyone have any advice for me? I am attempting the 3 day PTing deal. I'm open to other suggestions though, if anyone has any for me. Wink

Re: Day one of PTing...

  • Everyone is going to say "he's not ready", but I say keep it up.  Just distract him from worrying about pants with some activity....Say "oh, yeah, we will get your pants on, but first lets go paint a picture" or something...go do that, try to go potty afterwards, and keep trying.

  • He knows when he's going pee or poop, but just so stubborn. So I decided on my vacation, I should gently urge him to do it. Smile

  • Mine won't wear the underwear either, and he got to pick it out! Ok, so this is what I've done and it seems to work some of the time. Remember, it's a process and won't happen over night, but stay strong:) Does he have a potty chair or do you have a little seat cover to go on top of the adult toilet? While my DD would NOT go in the little potty, she liked the Elmo seat cover and learned how to "go" while sitting on that. My 2 yr old son is the opposite. He likes to sit on the little potty chair. Just put him on and say, "go potty". If he gets up and walks away, 10 minutes later, put him on it again and say "go potty" again. Do this over and over even if he doesn't actually pee. Bribery works wonders too! I got a big bag of DumDum lollipops (they're nice and small) and say, "go potty and you'll get a treat!" I know some moms would disagree with this, but I've trained 3 other kids and am on the last, so in my case, it works! And finally, don't get discouraged. Keep praising him...even if he just sits on the potty. If he doesn't want to wear the undies, put the pants on and pull them down for him each time you put him on the potty. Trust me, he'll hate having wet pants on if he has an accident and will eventually learn to wear underwear which is easier to pull up/down. I just keep my little one naked. If we're at home, I'll put a shirt and that's it. Of course, I have to crank the heater up, but it makes things easier. There will be accidents, but he'll get it soon! Good luck! (and I highly recommend you getting the dum dums!)
  • We did 3-day (not a "method" per se, just put her in underwear when we had a three-day weekend).

Day one was HELL!!!  She was crying for us to put her pullup back on.  Then FINALLY she peed on her potty chair.  She had some mental issue about not being able to "let go" when she sat on the toilet or potty chair.  I think she had one accident that weekend and just a handful since then.

She was 3 years 5 months old so she was definitely ready.  We didn't push the poop thing and actually let her have a pullup on for that during that weekend (we were, in her defense, at the park--we'd driven there so she pooped in the car).  But she decided she would pee and poop on the potty in the same weekend.  She's now been in underwear at night, too, for almost two months.

    Good luck--stick with it!

ETA: for a while, the sticker chart wasn't a big deal to her.  But when she ACTUALLY started to PT, that sticker chart was a huge motivator/reward for her.  She was totally into Thomas at the time and I found a Thomas chart online.  She LOVED putting all the stickers on after she went (sat on the potty, went potty, flushed, washed her hands).

  • Just start doing a bunch of fun stuff to totally take his mind off of it.  Do art projects.  Bake cookies.  Build a fort in the living room.  ANYTHING.
