Parenting after a Loss

hat at bedtime?

I was just reading about the 3rd month in my what to expect the first year and it said no hats during sleep.... for real? It is to reduce overheating, in turn, SIDS.

I thought you were to try to keep a hat on as much as possible the first year?

Does your baby wear a hat at night?

This. Kate has never worn a hat.

  • We may have put a hat on her to sleep for the first week or two but it was constantly raining and cold outside, making the inside feel extra cold.  I think I wanted a hat myself.  But it was for a very short time.

  • We did, but the hat kept falling off.  Then, one day I saw the hat fall over her face.  That scared me so we stopped putting a hat on her when she sleeps.  During the day she still may wear one, depending on the situation.

    this!

  • Nope, no hats around here- not since the hospital. She doesn't wear one around the house during the day either. The only time she has a hat on is when we go out and it's cold.
  • ds hasn't worn at hat to bed since he was in the hospital. He can pull his hat off so I wouldn't want to chance him doing this when he's sleeping.

  • No. we put a hat on her the first few nights home (she slept in a swing) and then realized we weren't supposed to. Not only because of overheating, but also the hat could slide over the babies face pretty easily.

  • I think we did it for about a month...then I probably read something like what you read. But by then we had stopped with hats anyhow - none of them fit (he's had a 95-100 %ile head since he was in utero).

This. It's not worth the fight with DS unless it's cold. He H-A-T-E-S hats.

This. We saw the hat over his face on one of his naps and I freaked out. After that we stopped wearing hats to bed.  He only wears them now if we go out and it's cold, otherwise no hats inside either.

  • Our LO does some nights.  We live in a 146 yr old historic home and it has alot of drafts.  Sometimes our furnace struggles to keep up because of the drafts and sometimes its not really what I consider to be cozy warm on the 1st floor which is where LO sleeps.  On nights when its below 0 and I know its going to be cold (especially if there is a west wind) he wears a hat-other than that he only wears one when we leave the house.
